Does anyone know any sites that will alow me to text an american phone number for free
Its costing me a bomb to text my friends overseas

Pick up an o2 sim card. This will give you 250 free webtexts per month which can be sent internationally. You can also use them from your phone using cabbage.

However I think O2 have some small print that you can only text GSM phones. So this will work if the person in the US is on GSM rather than Verizion etc.

Straight Flush

I used to text the States a bit and could never find a cheap way of doing it properly, so I had to settle on using the phone.

Sites like Voipcheap, Smsdiscount and Call13434.ie will let you text the States for few cents a go. However, when I used these sites, my American friends never got my correct caller ID with the message (a random UK number used to come up).

But you could also try using the website of your friend's network which might let you text for free.

I dont understand how would i send them an email to send a text?

You used to be able to do it via ICQ but I haven't used it in years.

Open your email, enter number@txt.att.net where number is your friends mobile number in the U.S. In the body stick your message (max about 100 characters) and hit send. The email will go to the at&t gateway and be converted into a text and sent to the phone.
