I'm reading all over the web tonight about Spotify launching their iPhone app and how it is live in the app store. But I can't find it. Anybody know if it is supposed to be available in Ireland? Premium accounts are available here so I don't see why not...

    Have my hopes up :)

    Sorry to dash them

Spotify on PC and iPhone is UK only. You cannot sign up in Ireland, they need a licence, they are concentrating on the US and then everywhere else. The only way you could get Spotify is:

Using a proxy and english details sign up on their website and take out the premium package (Spotify is free to download on an iDevice but you need a subscription). Then use an english credit card to shop on the uk store and download. Bit too much trouble for me!

this is bull****, im a premium user in ireland which they fully allow. so they think its ok to take our money from ireland and not offer the same service, thats bull****, what does it matter what device I use to listen to it on?? i shall be cancelling my account i think

Spotify on PC ... is UK only.
Ad-supported free is UK only, they had no problems at all taking my Irish credit card details for a premium account.

Very disappointed having bought premium and not being able to download on the App Store.

Set up a UK 3v style card, register with iTunes on the uk site and bob is indeed your uncle.

Looking at the Spotify blog......they are working on it, see below:

We’re looking into the issue for those of you who can’t get the app in Germany, Ireland, etc. Hopefully we can get a quick solution.

Would be nice if they said what the issue is....I don't have a compatible phone yet, but would like to get an Android phone plus pay for this when it is available in Ireland, until then I will hold off.

I have spotify and it's free + ad free. I'm not sure how it happened but I'm assuming it's cause I downloaded and registered for it in Wales and then just brought the laptop back. In theory therefore you could probably either set up an account via proxy or take your laptop over the border and do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 534 ✭✭✭Easy Rider

Yeah, it is easy to get free, ad-free too (although now it is stopping after a few songs trying to play ads) in any case, mobile spotify is what is being talked about, it is not free and requires a subscription of 10 euro a month, problem is allot of people are premium users already, where the everywhere but Germany and Ireland are not getting the Itunes app available in the respective country Itunes stores, that is the problem.....paying the same as every other country but not getting the same service

Seen on the blog it was released, dived onto my pc, set up a proper 'real' irish account, payed my 9.99 and then found this out.... FREAKED!!! >:(

works perfect and the app is fantastic too...

all this in the link above actually... .

Was pretty annoyed too when i found that spotify isn't being offered on the irish itunes app site, especially as i have been paying the monthly sub to access it for a while....think i found a way around it though.

Sign out of your itunes a/c
    click on free apps
    click on an app
set up new a/c - making sure to put uk as your country of residence.
    under payment method click 'none'
    fill in a uk address
then log out of itunes on iphone/itouch and log in with new a/c.
search for and install spotify app
    bingo. works perfectly

anyone using it care to offer a review - does the caching of playlists work, is it smooth over 3G etc? Spotify on the PC is awesome, I'm amazed Apple have allowed it on the iPhone.

Installed, currently debating whether or not to get the premium edition.

Maybe I'll do it after I get the necessities, you know, like a car and somewhere to live.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭yogicolly

works really well, can search by song, artist and album. im only in an edge network area at the moment and it seems pretty good, lost connection a few times. the offline mode seems fantastic, but found when i clicked to take an album offline it caused a few pauses in a playing song that i was streaming. its fantastic app though, really a great bonus to a great product as it was. its kinda annoying that i had to get work around to use today but hopefully will be in irish app store very soon but im happy with the work around.

Once its on your phone can you switch back to the normal a/c or do you have to use it without use of your other applications. My beloved has an iphone and want to get it set up for her

    Updated

Followed the instructions and it works great - thanks a mil!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 222 ✭✭rordeb

I know this is the wrong place to post this question but its one of the few threads on the topic - any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone know what kinda levels of data it uses? Am on the normal broadband package 30GB but just want to ensure I don't get a massive bill by leaving it on the whole time and letting it serve up music for the EU!

Just got the premium version on my iphone. WOW. this is serioulsy amazing stuff. No need for any credit card tricks or anything. just set up a uk app store a/c and select no payment method. Class!

I've set up a uk account and have it on the phone now, but it's looking for login details, but how do I go about setting up a spotify account? It seems to be invite only?

The free accounts are like that - though you can set one up via a UK proxy. To use the Spotify app on the iPhone, you need a premium account anyway (which you can sign up for in Ireland) and it costs around €10 a month. The iPhone app doesn't support free accounts at all currently.

Absolutely loving this app. Just signed up for the premium account yesterday for the iphone app. Just loaded up a load of albums onto it. Like the force offline feature as i wouldnt fancy streaming it over edge too much.

Would like to see them add a feature that you can skip songs in the playlist with the button on the headphones like with the normal mp3 player.

Is spotify like napster with everything you could want or is it a small limited library of mediocre music they got the rights to?

I'm wondering because apple have an event tomorrow and Im wondering whether itunes might also get a subscription service...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

It's nowhere near as vast as Napster, iTunes, Amazon, etc but it's still a pretty decent catalog and I wouldn't call it mediocre - but far from complete. A lot of the tracks also seem to come from oddball compilations as well, instead of the original album...

You can set up a free account (Google is your friend ;)) and try it out for awhile, see how you like it. To use the iPhone app, you need to get a premium account anyway and that's available to us in Ireland, with no weird workarounds required...

    Dear Spotify user,

We're writing to you in regards to your Spotify account which up
until now you've been using free of charge. While we are really
happy that you are enthusiastically using Spotify, we are
unfortunately going to have to restrict access to your free
    account.

Spotify is currently available in six countries: Sweden, Norway,
Finland, Spain, France and the UK. We never intended to allow
use of our service outside of those countries and we do not run
any adverts on your account like we do in the launch countries.
For this reason we have to restrict your account, you will be
able to log in to Spotify and view music and playlists but not
    listen to any music.

We are sorry that we have to take this step. We do hope to
launch our free service in more countries in the future.

If you have any questions regarding this please feel free to
    contact our support team. (support@spotify.com)

    Regards,
    The Spotify team.

Just got the same email - presumably going out to all Irish accounts set up originally with the UK proxy?
Still working at the moment though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 490 ✭✭spidermonkey

I have not recieved that email yet, although Ads are being displayed today in spotify, they hadn't before.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 909 ✭✭✭mobius42

I set this up today and I think it's fantastic. Okay, so it's €10 a month but that's not that much considering I can stream whatever music I want, legally.

I tried the Spotify iPhone app on a bus trip and it works great over Wifi and 3G. There was no interruptions or pauses. Over Edge it didn't really work at all, stopping every 5 seconds. I'm not sure if you can pause it and wait for it to buffer. You can also download songs for when you don't have a connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 756 ✭✭✭smackyB

Yeh, got the email as well.. I can't afford the 10e a month!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 985 ✭✭✭APM

got same email today myself, as I had been living and using it in Spain for nearly a year previous.

Will be deleting it now, €10p/m is pure rip-off. All I had to put up with in Spain was the occasional add like a radio 30 second add.

I got that at first too - the way to do it is by following acab's directions in an earlier thread post - the key step is to click on any free app, then it will ask you to create an account and you'll see 'None' as a payment option. I just did this myself a couple of hours ago and it definitely works.

+ 1. I just tried Skype as the app download and it works perfectly fine - the "none" payment option is there...

So is the free version working on iphone in ireland or not?

No, the free version has never worked on the iPhone, the app is only for those with premium accounts.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 909 ✭✭✭mobius42

I went to the Spotify website today to check something and it's now telling me that Spotify isn't available in Ireland at all! Not even the Premium service! It's still working for me for now though.

Stupid regional restrictions like this are going to kill these services.

EDIT: Never mind. I checked again and now the Premium is back, alongside a new Day Pass for €1 option.

It's reverted back to invitation only due to excessive demand.

I don't think the payment option of None exists anymore - I've just tried it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4 spudznik

ok if you try and setup an account using the iphone or itouch then you cannot select the payment option of none but if you do it through itunes you can...

Tried signing up for a Spotify account just there but it seems they're gone back to using invite only now. Could someone send me an invite?

    Thanks

After using the mobile version on the iPod touch for the last week or so, I'm pretty impressed with the service. There's always the arguement about whether paying a tenner a month, simply to access tunes, is worthwhile but with the ability to download playlists / lps and listen to them while offline, I think it's worth it.

Anyone anyway into music will spend at least €120 per year on releases, even if you're getting as much as you want online nefariously. Spotify subscriptions sate the guilt (if there is any) about illegal downloads and give easy access to millions of tracks on or offline. the App just ties it all together in a tidy way for me.

One issue I have is that it's still not on the Irish iTunes app store. Whether this is to do with the company or the record industry here, I'm not sure but given the latter's ability to make a wrong call in recent years, I suspect they may be at it again now.

This model might not be the knight in shining armour that groups like IRMA have been looking for... but they'd be better advised to back the like of this instead of chasing ISPs through the courts, in a futile war against illegal filesharers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 909 ✭✭✭mobius42

Anyone who signed up when the app came out was lucky. It seems that Spotify is no longer available to Irish people at all, not even the Premium service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 163 ✭✭menuisier

yea i jumped on this straight away quite happy with it but i wish the app gave suggestions of other bands you might like as the pc program does.

i know what ya mean about paying money and no actually having owning any music but if keep subscribing it doesnt make a difference and if you dont that just means you have to spend half a day downloading the albums and syncing them.

anyone care to tell me where to get some or share some good playlists with me?
i've looked at www.spotyshare.com but there seems to be very little there and what is isnt very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭sham69

Seems Like I jumped on this a bit too late.
I have the app for the iphone (setup a new itunes account and chose UK as destination).
Setup a Spotify account (by using a uk proxy) and attempted to buy a premium account.
Here is where the problem is.
I can't use my irish credit card it seems.
No problme I thought, I will use one of those entropay virtual ones.
Took me forever to set it up and put some funds on it only to discover that Spotify doesnt accept Visa Electron which is the typ that entropay uses.
Has anyone any ideas how to pay?
    Thanks
    Sham

ps Hope this is not against forum rules, if it is feel free to delete.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 534 ✭✭✭Easy Rider

Yeah. Wanted to pay for premium a week ago, anyway....it is, as everyone has pointed out, not available in Ireland, even premium...

So if anyone has an invite, please feel free to PM me one or if they know of a way around it so I can give them my money please do tell....In work I can get onto the site as UK as we go through a UK proxy but it is looking for a UK credit card :-(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 376 ✭✭samsamson

I haven't tried signing up to the premium service, but for anyone trying to use the free service, this method worked perfectly for me a couple of days ago:

    http://www.spotifyripping.com/?page_id=5

Haven't done anything funny with proxies or changing my IP or whatever. Just followed those short instructions and now it's working away perfectly for me.

Edit: At step 7, where it says changing the country may not work for everyone - I couldn't change my country, so it still says UK for me. But it doesn't seem to be a problem. I haven't gone past 14 days yet so we'll see how it goes!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 756 ✭✭✭smackyB

Yeh I went over the 14 day limit, account got suspended :( Thing is that you can't startup spotify and put in proxy settings unless you've logged in sucessfully first so it's a bit of a catch 22. Trick is to keep and eye on how many days you've been "abroad" and before that time expires, find a UK proxy server. Its either that or creating lots of spotify accounts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭sham69

I got mine sorted last week.
Have to say its amazing, I have loads of stuff in my playlist.
Its easy to forget that it's being streamed as such.
Even on 3G on my way to work in the mornings its seemless.
Anyway I am using it on my mac, pc and iphone.
My boss had a uk credit card so paid for the year for me and I paid him the money.
I have 30 invites so if anyone needs one let me know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,321 ✭✭✭sham69

Forgot to say they now take paypal, not sure about UK , Ireland etc but all I know is they do take it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 534 ✭✭✭Easy Rider

Hi Sham69 sent you a PM, if you have an invite that would be great as I want to get premium...
