Buying Car Tomorrow

I'm buying a car for the first time tomorrow. Basically i want to check what i need to do with regards insurance and tax. So i have the cash already for the car and will go to the insurance company in the morning and insure the car. I'm collecting the car in the afternoon and will own it when i pay the cash. With regards to taxing the car do i have to send the log book to the vehicle registration place in Shannon before i can tax the car? Whats the normal procedure when buying a car?

The seller gets you to fill in your name and address on the change of ownership section on the car's current Vehicle Registration Certificate. This form is then posted to the Department of the Enviroment in Shannon who will issue you a new Vehicle Registration Cert in a few weeks with your name and address on it as the new owner. You are offically the registered owner of the car then and can tax the car if needed.

If buying private it is best to accompany the seller to a nearby post box and drop it in as it is very common for the seller to promise to post it off later but then forget about it. This will save you alot of grief later. If buying from a garage then they will send the cert off to Shannon with your name and address on it as the new owner.
