I was thinking about doing the 10 day trial. I figure, I've never even tried it and they always say "dont knock it till youve tried it"

anyway just looking for some out of the gate tippage. I was looking at the professions and all and thought a gnome engineer might be fun. I just have no notion what class to play - and i hear thats more important than race or profession.

IMO when you start the game the race you pick is all about the appearance (there is a little more to it, but its not so important for beginners). Generally its best to pick a profession that'll either give you buckets of gold in the long run, or that will compliment your class. For example the warrior/blacksmith combo is a good one as you can craft your own armour and weapons.

As for class, its all about what role you think you'd like to play. Want to be using destructive magic, slashing swords, have a pet fight by your side, etc etc... Once you get into the game you can specialise your class through different talent trees. Another example, you can specialise your priest in healing or with more powerful magic.

well i liked the whole gnome thing because their quirky and techy. gnomish flying machines and all that. i dunno. i know that combat is the focus of the game (sadly enough) and theres no true non combat classes.

Of course I saw this http://www.blizzard.com/us/inblizz/fanart/images/screens/ss845-thumb.jpg I know its only fanart but wouldnt it be damn nice if a gnome could get one.

Engineering is a wacky profession giving you the ability to make weird items such as explosive sheep :D, if you choose it go for mining along with it (helps a lot for gathering materials).

Since it's your first character I'd advise a pure DPS class. Others might disagree with me but I think it's easier to go through instances for the first time when all you have to really do is kill things rather than being responsible for healing or tanking.

Many people find rogues to be great fun, the ability to stealth and sneak around being particularly appealing. Personally I'd recommend a mage as I've had most fun in WoW as one.

Just get in there and try out a few different classes and see which ones suit you best and more importantly which ones you enjoy playing.

    1. Class and Race
Make sure you pick a class and race that you want, don't pick it because someone else said its cool or what ever, read up on the class and choose one for yourself i.e like a fight and taking damage a warrior/paladin/druid/deathknight or helping people with spells and healing like a priest/paladin/shaman but their are many different combos you can have just read up before you pick, the race however is to your preference and style.

    2. Professions
It goes for what ever like doing e.g money hungry or self upgrading, but its also better to pair stuff up like mining/blacksmithing, leatherwork/skining so one works off the other.

    3. Experience
The one thing i highly recommend is playing the game with friends or if your stuck make friend fast in the game cause playing WOW solo is a terrible experience. I went from 1-28 solo and hated it until my friends starting playing their alternate character so we all had a good time leveling together.

And take your time levelling. See it all while its still new.

Ah guys, just tell him to make a paladin - problem solved! :pac:

Seriously tho theres good advice here. As you seem interested in professions make sure to pick up the complementing gathering profession as your secondary one. Eg: Mining gathers for Engineering, Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting while skinning gathers for leatherworking etc etc.

And might I recommend two websites you will be frequently using...

http://www.wowwiki.com - detailed info on everything warcraft

http://www.wowhead.com - has info on every item, quest, npc etc in the game. It will become your new google!

Oh and A for effort to the guy that PM'd me trying to get the referral but I already opened an account :/ anyway I'd have to give dibs to my boss on that one anyway. Worth getting a 2nd account to link to his? is the xp bonus worth it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,936 ✭✭✭nix

You have to level together for the triple xp, but the xp you get is sick.

You would be level 60 in no time, thats when the bonus xp wears off :)

Funny, I though with a handle like Overheal you'd be a long time WoWer! :D

If you're not sure what class to play, then try a few, that's what the trial is for. You can switch back to another alt character whenever you like. While there will always be a combat element to the game, you don't have to play as a pure offensive damage dealing role, there are a few classes that can tank, heal or both, which might suit your playstyle better. There's a lot more to Wow than just slugging it out.

If you're going to pick Engineering (and I do, some of the best fun I've had has been building my own stuff!), then you'll definitely need Mining, both for the materials required, and the vast quantities of cash you'll spend! install the Curse add-on client, and get the Gatherer add-on, it helps keeping track of ores.
I'd also recommend QuestHelper, Auctioneer, Crap Away! and Bagnon.

    Dont do it...

Nah just messin'. I recently rolled a undead mage after playing ally for 2 years, and its a breath of fresh air. Seems like blizz put alot more effort into the starting area, and leveling is piss easy as a mage, and quite fun. Best thing you could do is just roll a few toons and play them a bit to find which suits your play style.

Some great advice here from everyone

Just some bits I learned while playing. Sorry for the size.

1 - Try to play a char that you can do several things. For example instead of just leveling a DPS character level one that can heal or tank also. A Paladin, Shaman or Druid for Example. If you want to chance it Il list what each can do below and if not just ignore the next few lines :) I leveled a hunter the first time round for me and though it was great fun and I was raiding all the level 60 game content etc I still changed to a Shaman in TBC just because the choice of more then one roll adds so much more fun to the game its great having and can be so helpful in getting groups etc.

Paladins there are hundreds of them and unfortunatley the majority are crap but Shaman and Druids tend to be in short supply when you reach the end game level. If you are willing to learn to play the Paladin class right then they are great fun and amazing at Tanking Dpsing and Raid Healing but they do tend to get messed about every patch so this week your buffed up to the nines and in a months time some genius decides to make your best spell useless then the following month your back to being imba.

Druids and Shaman though are amazing to play and they tend to stay the same and dont get messed about so much. I'm not saying they never will get gimped or pimped but Blizz has been messing about with paladins since day one and still can't make up their mind.

Paladins have 3 Jobs they can do well - DPS, Tanking or Healing. Dps pallys there are soo many unless you are really good at it you will find it hard once you reach 80 to get groups. Tankadins are amazing and as it is one of the easiest classes to tank with you will find it very easy to learn how to do it right and then groups will loves you. Healadins are great also but can be hard to gear up at the lower levels so if you level a pally I would do it as retri then decide what spec you like most at around the 65-75 mark so you have experience playing it when you reach the big 80.

Shamans - I love them, my main is an enhancement shaman. You can play them as 3 Spec's - A melee type combat stype (Enhancement), A spell caster type combat (Elemental) or as a Healer (Restoration). The totems that they place are the reason that Shamans are so needed at the end game level. It is sooo easy to level one of these little guys from 1 however again they are a bit hard to get used to and to be good at so might not be a great first time class to play but if ya put the effort in they are great fun and are needed not so much Enhancement but the other two specs.

Druids Amazing to level as one you get to experience a rogue style combat in cat form, a tanking combat style in Bear form, a healing role if you spec tree and in Boomkin you get to feel what its like to be a spell caster. Their DPS in Cat & Boomkin form is amazing once you learn to play them right and the fact you can switch easy between cat & bear form if you are feral makes leveling very easy. The healing they can do in Tree form is great also and you will find that raids always need Druids for the buffs and Healing over time that druids can do so getting groups at 80 wont be a problem if you are good.

2 - If you can do the friend leveling then thats great but as you are always leveling with someone and so fast it can actually be hard to learn how to cope with things on your own and learn the in's and out's of the class. So might be harder once you reach 60 and are soloing plus you will also miss out on alot of places to quest as you wont need to do so much to gain the xp needed. If you do level with someone though you can avail of the giving levels to another toon so you can get a 60 and a 30 out of it if you are the person recruiting another. Big Pro's and the Con's might be worse in the end if you are a first time player.

3 - Level your professions as you level don't leave till the end if you can avoid it. Think if you want Cooking & fishing then level them as you go as they are a pain to level later on and complement each other so well that you will level both very easily if you take the extra bit of time when your wickle. Also check vendors for cooking patterns and buy a few extra if you use them as they sell on most servers for silly money in the auction house as everyone is after the achieves.

Fishing and collecting cooking mats is also a great money maker as is mining if you level it with your engineering. What ever gems and ore you dont need sell to the ah and you should make quite a bit of cash you can start saving for your mounts and training. Also keep in mind if you level one the hybrids above that the dual spec costs 1000g and is very handy around the 60+ level mark for getting groups if you collect gear for two specs so making cash early is well worth doing. Try to sell everything that isn't grey in the auction house.

I'm leveling my paladin atm and I have made a fortune from leveling the low level crap I've picked up that someoen else needs to level their professions so def worth trying them on the ah before you vendor them. Make sure to get a few 16 slot bags very early on to help cope with all the stuff you'l pick up and as the above poster said get auctioneer to as it will help you sell all the bits you get.

If you pick up any gear greens sell them in the ah to people are always buying them to de for mats so worth ahing them. I sell crap stat weapons to the vendor if they are more valuable that way - again auctioneer will tell you the prices and will also tell you how much the mats cost that the item changes to so you will know.

4 - If you roll a melee class - Try to level as many weapon skills as you can when leveling to ensure that when you get a new smexy weapon you dont have to go level it from 1 before you can go get back to questing/leveling. If you roll a druid you wont have to worry about it so much as your in a form it doesn't affect your damage but if your a rogue, paladin, shaman, hunter etc you will miss alot and could die if your fighting mobs your own level or higher without the ability to heal yourself etc. Nothing worse then having an amazing weapon in your bag cos you'l have to go back to a lower area to skill it up as you cant heal lol.

5 - If you can and if you want the help use carbonite instead of quest helper alot easier to use and covers alot more. Also afaik the map has a form of gatherer already so will save you having to download that. A bag addon (Bagnon) is great to have lets you see everything in your bags and bank instantly instead of having to sort though all your slots. Appearances addons like Xperl & Bartender are great to to start off with. Xperl lets you move your frames around allowing you to place your party window where you want it and your own Health bar etc. Bartender lets you move your action bars where ever you want also which helps big time as you learn more and more spells and want then closer together.

Curse gaming is great to have a goo at all the different types of addons available and you can customise your screen in the best way for yourself.

Can't think of anything else atm sorry if the wall of text to but hope it helps.

none of which are available to the gnome :pac: but ill keep it in mind for a 2nd one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 46 dubhdara3

If you are interested in playing a gnome, I would probably advise a gnome warrior, rogue or warlock, since I think these classes are quite easy to pick-up (a little bit more difficult to master) but fun to start on. I'm not sure if Paladins are available to gnomes (as I mostly play horde), but they are a really good class if available to you.

But Mostly don't be afraid to try something different races and classes if the gnome isn't working out, but son't expect there to be much difference in the classes before level 10, and it'll be after level 20 before you see any massive differences in them.

But Welcome to WOW and enjoy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭Kyri

Sorry hun I thought you where talking about gnomish engineering not a gnome that has engineering :) There are two kinds of Engineering Goblin & Gnomish neither require you to actually play as that race its just the type of things you can make. Make sure you have a look at what gadgets ya want later on as they vary still as far as im aware.

Rogue or Warrior there is nothing cuter that a lil gnome beating people up and hiding in their legs while doing so :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,043 ✭✭✭2 Espressi

Gnome Rogues are great fun, small but deadly, players hate getting their arses kicked by something so small! :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

yeah i was lured in by the engineering bonus and the comically small stature. less interested in the combat (combat is combat) but crafting stuff and goofing off sounds hootish. ill try a rogue later anywho, i need to get a new account anyway to link up for trip xp. im not digging the cloth/leather restriction though. its fun wearing metal :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

if I activate early do I lose my free trial days or will I get 30 days plus whatever time i have left on trial.

some of these trial restrictions are maddening

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

I think your account is turned into a full account straight away, so you would lose you free time. I'm not 100% sure on this though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭af666x

Kiss your evenings goodbye buddy :)

I second the advice that you should try out a couple of classes at first and see how you get on. Paladin springs to mind, as that's what my girlfriend picked (she's 60 now and a pretty decent player imo) and they can tank/heal/dps, they have a few "O****!!! SAVE MEEE!! abilities, and are generally great fun to play.

Whatever class you pick, make sure you know the key stats you will need to enhance your character (int is not good for a warrior :) )

What server will you be playing on?

Longest Install.... - ever? I have to think about that one.

I've reformatted my OS and gotten to Firefox faster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 428 ✭✭Joneser

Yeah its a pretty huge install alright, you will have to patch to version 3.2 aswell which involves downloading another 1.6gb, fun times :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86,729 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

    SILENCE!

15mbps line though. I managed to slip in by midnight :)

I'm pretty sure when I moved from a trial to a full account I kept the remaining time on my trial account.. T'was a good while ago though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,339 ✭✭✭me-skywalker

but dont they have restrictions on trial accoutns anyway like cant whisper ppl and cant use AH and get pst lvl 20?

and past lvl 40 is achieveable in 10 days nevermind level 20 so why would u want to stay trial?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,355 ✭✭✭dyl10

    Don't play it.

From a medium-long term player, there's better gaming experiences out there, more interesting and enriching experiences on the internet, WOW is a habit you don't want.

Once you upgrade to a full account all your restrictions are lifted (using the mailbox, auction house, whispering...) and you keep playing on your remaining trial time.
...As we do not want to penalize someone for being eager to upgrade their trial account, the free 10 days that come with the trail are not removed if you decide to upgrade your account early on. Instead, the free 30 days that come with your upgrade to World of Warcraft are added on top of your remaining trial time...
