I was writing out an essay on my laptop and saved it, but then it broke, i wasn't too bothered about losing it as it was only a couple of hundred words. I go my laptop back the other day and went to log in with the different password they gave me. When i logged in, i was in a brand new user profile and could not find any of my old files, photos, documents, settings etc. Eventually, I found them in the data section but was unable to find a way to put them back into the profile again. Every time I log in, my user profile is at a factory setting with none of my previous files saved. I wrote out the essay I lost again and saved it, when i logged in today it was gone. I am at my wits end here. I've been searching all day but I can only find the old version at the moment. I tried to change the settings on my user profile to make it like my previous settings to see if that would do anything. That just made things worse, now when i try to log into the profile it says access denied for some reason! If someone would please help me id really appreciate it im having a nervous breakdown here!

What operating system do you have?

Is the profile they gave you an admin account?

Try creating yourself a new profile, with admin status, from control panel > user accounts.

The above might not be possible if they happened to give your profile limited privileges.

With the new admin account you created, you might be able to get to the file through Windows Explorer, by going something like c:>documents and settings>"name of account that was previously set up">My documents

Alternatively, did you try searching for the file whilst logged in with the new admin account?

About the passwords, if you're the only one who uses the laptop, do you really need to have a password? There are ways to remove the passwords from XP profiles, easily found with google. Might be worth doing so that you can see everywhere, and move/copy files to wherever you want them.
