So the story is that I am on jobseekers but have been offered a saturday gig as a sole trader. Now my initial thought was great that I can just sign off for the Saturday.

But Im now thinking Id need to be an employee to do that? This gig is a one day a week so nowhere near enough to give up jobseekers but I dont want to do it unless its all above board and I pay my tax on it or alert SW because the last thing I need is to get done for a few hours work.

So could anybody give me an idea of what would be correct to do?

Setup a limited company , and employ yourself one day a week ?

    Quite common in IT contracting.

I didnt think I could claim jobseekers then though unless I shut down that company?? Also thats bringing all kinds of costs with it then such as audited accounts to be submitted to CRO which involves paying an audit fee and this really is not worth a huge outlay to me. Ltd companies aernt as fun as they seem.

You should maybe look into the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance. I know they're quite strict about who gets approved, but you can't get it unless you try.

The person you speak to would likely know the ins and outs of taxation and welfare as well, so even if you don't get BTWEA, you'd likely get some invaluable info.

You are allowed to work up to three days per week and still claim the dole. A number of people work both as self employed and as prsi workers depending on how the work falls. Register with revenue as self employed for tax purposes. Let your Social Welfare office know each week that you will be working on Saturday, the Social Welfare week is a 6 day week, they will deduct 1 day from your benefit for the weeks you work on Saturday. Keep a record of your earnings and declare them next year.
