I think I saw something about a gaming society; however I think it may be more based around console gaming and the like.

I' d say it'd be hard from anyone living on campus/halls to partake in competitive gaming with the steam ports etc. blocked

There is du gamers. Dunno what they do tho tbh.

I'm fairly certain that DU Gamers are more card, board and roleplaying based than console games.

competitive gaming, when you absolutely can be bothered putting you post in context.

There is no console gaming society in trinity.

Not particularly extensive but it seems this is it. Maybe suggest to them to expand the games section?
    No PS3:(

True I imagine that any attempts to start a console gaming soc would be rejected or merged with sci fi though right?

I thought this was about a gambling society.
Competitive gaming like monopoly for money? Or Gears of War for money?

Or I am completely up the wrong tree here?

    That would be the one.

    🤪

For money? Can't see the CSC liking that.

Whatever happened to the Card Society?

Maybe we should make a TCD Steam group. I'll do the honours if you want.

i'd love to join a gamers society, the only ones on campus are du gamers and scifi soc. Gamers just play jenga and other board games and sci fi just show movies and play super smash brothers in their society room.

i remember going into them with a few friends last year to find them all in the corner huddled around their N64. They do give out a lot of free beer and run assasin which is pretty cool.

a 360/ps3 room would be great for playing a bit of COD4 between lectures but I cant see the college providing funding for all the consoles/tvs let alone finding a room for it.

a mate of mine went to CSC last year to try set up a society and they said that there were already too many and that the college couldt afford to fund any new societies. Not sure if this is still the case but i wouldnt be surprised if it is.

I have a 360 and a ps3 in my house & play online a bit. But when I do, I friggin' hate losing! lol. So a competitive gaming soc would be right up my street!
The Science Fiction Society looks like the closest we've got to it though....
    :/

Scifi does have a Playstation 3 now, the website just hasn't been updated.

    Hey

The Computer Science society (DUCSS) is organising an intervarsity tournament with other dublin based colleges. There's gonna be a small one in a few days but seeing how TCD isn't back in college we're gonna miss it.

Come up to the stand during freshers week and we'll talk.

From the talk of the other societies it seem slike mixed. There'll be some 360 games but I think it's mainly PC (SC, CSS, TF2, Q3)

I'm not really into PC stuff tbh.. D'you know what console games will be played??

CS 1.6 5x5 lan competition in hamilton computer rooms ftw!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 92 ✭✭Fedule

    The basic breakdown is:

    CCGs/RPGs - Gamers
    PC Games - Netsoc
    Consoles - Sci Fi Soc

I happen to be the Games Librarian (or, my much cooler title is Gamesmaster) for SFSoc this year, so if enough people bug me for us to get a particular game that I haven't second guessed yet I can suggest we buy it. Our room is open for people dropping in most of the time, and if (majority of) people in the room want to play games, games will be played. We also have regular tournaments and less regular freeplays, depending on how compellingly I can argue for us to buy certain games.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Craguls

Any chance of getting a PS3 then since the price dropped? :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 92 ✭✭Fedule

We have a PS3. (pre price drop though). Sadly, however, it doesn't see much use or demand on account of a general lack of offline, 4P friendly games. But like I said, I'm all ears for recommendations, especially for stuff we can run tournaments and freeplays on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 945 ✭✭✭gearoidof

The main reason for a lack of comp gamers is that it's a very grey area, there's no official society for it, sci fi soc netsoc, ducss and gamers all have run comp gaming events.

So, the CSC sees that there are already societies with an interest in it, and they think one of these societies should take the mantle, so setting up a new society seems like a waste of money to them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,388 ✭✭✭Señor Juárez

It is completely pointless trying to set up a new society for something which is already catered for. Doing so would only be for the sake of a more obvious name, anyone wanting to do gamey stuff in college can just get involved in SciFi, DUCSS, Netsoc, Gamers, whatever.

Hell, even the LGBT are doing the odd Wii tournament these days.

    Hi guys,

If theres genuine interest in getting a game going ducss would be happy to donate the society room (In the Hamilton building) for a good gaming session during freshers week.

We've got 3 very good machines and one alright one so enough for 2v2 at least and LOADS of space for laptops.

I was wondering the same thing myself! I never joined it. But I was told they'd be getting Modern Warfare 2 and having some sort of an intervarsities league with Halo being played?

Modern Warfare 2: Very true, damn right we're getting that. We also recently got Halo ODST, and every now and then we have 8-player system link using its Halo 3 disk and our copy of Halo 3.

Intervarsities: You heard right, but you heard wrong. This is actually going to involve FIFA '10 and is being run by EA in cooperation with societies in each university. This was originally going to happen yesterday but the organizers (not EA themselves, but a 3rd party) messed up and now it's on next Tuesday.

On top of that, we'll be getting the Beatles: Rock Band "soon". And if you show up and get enough people to yell, we're always open to suggestions for games to buy.

Gamers has LAN nights occasionally, which might whet your computer-gaming appetites. A bunch of us head out to a LAN centre (currently GametheWorld on Grafton Street, or Spiderlan on O'Connell Street if we're feeling cheap), book it for overnight, and play all night.

Sign up for the mailing list and find out when we have the next one.
