Recommendation on which iPod I should get

All I want it to do is play music, play videos and have a pdf reader - I really want to be able to read books.

I don't need all the extra features the iPod touch seems to have.

Any idea which one I should be looking at - gonna buy second hand and about 8GB should be enough space.

    Thanks.

If you want to read books I'd say you should definitely get an iPod touch. Bigger screen and much better controls (for reading) than on an iPod classic.

Wait till the Apple iPod event is over in a couple weeks (End of September I think)... The iPod line will be refreshed then so you'll get the latest one

It's on the 9th of September, this Wednesday - and yes OP, it'd be a good idea to wait until after this as the various new models will be announced. You'd also end up getting better deals soon enough on the existing ones, which will be replaced.

And do any of you think that there is a serious contender to the iPhone touch out there at the moment I should investigate?

Not sure about Creative products really - there software is 'yuck'. Makes me think that some other elements of the business are not up to standard either.

I'm a big iPod/iPhone supporter myself but the Zune HD seems really promising as a media player and as a serious competitor to the (at least current) iPod Touch. Unfortunately, no release plans for Europe have been announced but even getting one from the US shouldn't be too hard if you decided on one.
