Are they any known issues with these ? How do they perform with diesel / petrol engines ?

I had a 2002 1.9 TDI auto Passat last and found the gearbox very good. No problems with it at all, quick off the mark, and gave very good mileage.

Definitely make sure you get the 130 BHP version though or if you could stretch to it, get a new shape (05 onwards) model with the DSG box. I now have a 2.0 TDI Passat with it and it's a completely different beast to the older car and far superior to my old one.

Would the passat share an auto box with the A4 ? I think they are called multitronic.

Did 15k in a new Passat 130Tdi Tiptonic - fabulous, no issues.

But, as mentioned, DSG came along. Got a Golf Plus 105bhp with DSG. Despite the deficit in power, it was actually better.

No problems with either, and no reason to think you would. My 93 Tiptronic 968 (same technology as the Passat) has 155k miles on it and it's as sweet as a nut.

Multitronic not the same: that's a CVT 'box, with 'presets' approximating gears. Very good too, btw: drove an 09 one lately, and I was v.impressed.

...fwiw, my Passat averaged 38mpg, so you do lose a little on the economy, but it's a small price to pay for the civility.
