I got stopped and cautioned on a 1937 BSA M20 doing 55 in a 30, Cops took down details but never went further. It probably would have got laughed out of court. :)

I was hoping at the time it would come up, I would have had the bike outside court. :)

i got done for doing 95mph in a 60mph zone in a 1972 7.2L buick century a few years ago.
I probably would have got away with it except for the fact i hit the cop with the speed gun, twice :o

the first time was when he jumped out of the bushes to try and stop me and clipped him with the wing mirror, so i reversed to see if he was still alive. He was shouting and screaming at me through my window and ranting about import duties and stuff, then he went round the back to take down the number plate and i took my foot of the brake, totally forgetting it was still in reverse (auto)
all i saw was his hat landing on the boot lid

after he dusted himself of for a second time he did some more shouting
and cursing and because i couldn't stop laughing he arrested me :o

I have got stopped a few times I must admit, but usually its only cos the gard wanted to have a look at the car.

That happened a few years ago in Kildare when we had a convoy of 8 cortinas....5 of us got through the lights and round the bend, only to get pulled up by a Gard. He explained he only wanted to look at the cars, but "someone" suggested he put his hat on and get out his book (for the craic) as three more lads would appear round the bend any second...you should have seen their faces!!

It took me 15 minutes to stop laughing after reading that.....

I was never stopped for speeding, but I've been careful not to break the speed limits;)

Never done for speeding but have often got the lecture about my 'illegal' number plates on the American cars!

I got done in my P6 passing a BMW on the N4 under a slip road. Duh! I tried to merge with traffic in the left lane after I spotted the squad car on the slip road. I slipped in behind a long line of Micras etc doing 50. The squad car raced down the road and slipped in behind me. His lights flashed. He said that it was one of the worst attempts to evade he had ever seen. A bright orange P6 with a black vinyl roof trying to hide in a sea of grey/silver shopping trolleys. He laughed , but still booked me. He asked me guess what speed I was doing. I said I wasn't to sure. I under estimated. He said I was clocked at 143Kms and was still accelerating when he started his pursuit. I stupidly asked him what that was in miles per hour as that all my speedo notes...I was hoping that might be seen as a mitigating factor. It didn't.

is it just me or is that a bit of a piss take?

While I wouldn't be the only one to be relieved to find out after being stopped that I wasn't in trouble with the law, what gives him the right to stop you and your mates "just cos he wanted a look at the cars"? If he really wanted to see classic cars he should go a classic car show some weekend like the rest of us. Would you really pull over for any old eejit who "just wanted a look at the car?" It was only because he had the uniform on.

Strikes me as an abuse of his position...

    Happened me.

I was proud to show off my car and I ended up using him as a reference on my own Garda application

A friend of mine got stopped a few times in his M3 and all they did was look at the car. How do I know that? Because his tax was out 8 months at the time.

I was in a parade years ago in a '62 Vauxhall Victor FB and an older guard stopped me. I was sure he was going to comment on the UK reg but his exact words were " God I remember them when we had them as squad cars. There was loads of room in the back to bate the sh*te out of lads".

    G'luck now Guard and thanks!

Last year i got pulled over by the boys in blue on the Clonakilty Road in Bandon, doing 94 in a 60 zone in a ... wait for this.... a 2CV.

The gard told me that i was doing 94 and i looked at him and said "94, in this????". He laughed and let me off.

I got pulled over in my old Fiat Spider on the "fish in a barrel" stretch of the Stillorgan Duel Carriageway. (Speed limit 60kph on a three lane carriageway?)

Not sure what I was doing, maybe 50mph or something. Turned out the guy said he couldn't book me because the gun was faulty and wasn't able to log the speed or something. Gave me a bollocking instead while I bit my tongue and thought - you've got away with it - don't screw it up by bitching about the ridiculous speed limit!

Have been stopped at misc checkpoints before with out-of-date discs and never a word said except about the car(s).

Speedo gear broke on my '71 XJ6 and got really annoyed at myself a couple of weeks later for getting caught doing 56mph in a 50 by the infamous (now ex-famous) camera opposite the Spa hotel in Lucan which I and everyone on the N4 knew about.

So about 6 weeks later the speedo cable broke. Within a week I was done for 36mph in a 30 by a Gatso van

    Grrrrr....

My speedo works now. And back to "nil point" too...

Hard to remember now, but I would have said a kind of light greeny greyish sort of colour. Was it you?

I carry my satnav as a defacto speedometer.
