    hi
I have a UK regestered Jaguar XJS 5.3L v12 1991 in great nick and i have arranged classic insurance from first Ireland for 212 euro a year which is brilliant. But i would love to put it on irish plates however i would love to know the following.
    • what year will it be eligable for classic tax
    • at what age will the VRT be reduced to a classic rate
if anyone can answer these questions i would be veryt grateful.
    Cheers
    Ro

As far as I know, a car has to be 30 years old on both counts.

Oh dear, someone hasn't done their homework....:pac:

"close to classic", not even near in government concession terms. Registering a motor car here isn't a desire, it's an obligation if you're resident... ;):p

It's unbelievable that that car will cost over €17,000 in road tax before it becomes eligible for classic car tax.

Surely cars over 20 years old should cost less in road tax?

why? wouldnt owners of 15 yr old cars then feel hard done by....

I've often thought that cars over 20 yrs old should have a lower rate of road tax, even halved would be an incentive to keep such cars as that Jaguar as a second/classic car.

Cant see it ever happening though!:(

I don't know what point you're trying to make, if you actually have any point.

My point, in case you didn't understand it, was that a car that is 20 years old is unlikely to be worth much more than the road tax payable for it.

A 20 year limit is relatively arbitrary but the limit has to be somewhere. Anywhere between 15 and 20 years seems about right.

BTW Silvera, there would never be an incentive to keep cars such as the Jaguar on the road. It suits the economy and the exchequer to incentivise the purchase of new cars, not to keep their old/current ones.
