Hey I was thinking of joining a club or 2 in Galway when I start...any ideas on good ones?

I was thinking about rowing for a change but i've never rowed in my life...do many just take things up from scratch?

Then there's Gaelic...i play for my club but dont think i'll have the commitment in college so i was wondering does anybody know about how many freshers teams are there?
I'm thinking about going for the fourth or fifth team so it'll just be for the fun...dont feel like competitive football...anyone know more than me??:):)

You can defo take up rowing from scratch...New novices start every year, like me last year.....Your a novice for 3 years unless you win an all irelnad(pot) or a couple of other smaller reggatas....Its the best club in the university...3 olympians....

Be warned though...Its the toughest sport out there..You will be training like an olympian yourself before long.....

If your interested you should come along for a while at the start...Keep an eye out on clubs day

You have no idea what you're getting yourself in for by joining a rowing club!

You will not believe how hard it is. I played rugby for near on 5 years and my body went into shock when i started rowing. The fitness level required is like nothing ive ever experienced before. VERY hard work but very rewarding. Joined ucd rowing last year, dropped out of my course and subsequently the team, probably gonna join NUI galway rowing now this year. I never learn haha...

You should join the kayak club, it's about fun not fitness! Just happens you get fit by accident while doing it!

Check out the forum for info.

You get all the help you need, and all the gear you need, it's a sweet deal! Try it ;)

You could always join a martial art?... They are supposed to be great craic.
Last year I joined the judo club and I have to say it was really good fun. Also it is handy when it comes to defending yourself.

I have to recommend joining the SubAqua Club! (SCUBA diving, snorkelling and underwater hockey)

    diving.jpg

Most people that join have never dived before. There's weekly training on Wednesday nights in college (lecture then pool session) then by Paddys Weekend you're in the sea and have an internationally recognised diving qualification! After training there's usually a game of underwater hockey in the pool if you're interested! Once you've the training done it's just a matter of going away on weekend trips and daytrips. You'll be surprised how clear it is and how much there is to see in Irish water, youtube it!

Come along to the first "Introduction to the Club" lecture on Wednesday 23rd September @ 7.30pm in the Tyndall Theatre (map).

Some more info on the club website: www.galwaydiving.com

As Cathal mentioned - you can join all the clubs and societies easily online at www.yourspace.nuigalway.ie . Once joined you'll get all the club emails/sms about upcoming training, trips and nights out! ;)

..Its the best club in the university...3 olympians....

I don't know how you came up with that ..... the most successful competitive club in the university perhaps...

If you want to have a good time the Judo club is the club to go to.... I joined there last year but had to stop because of timetable clashes and what not... but for the length of time I was there it was mad craic...

But I'm hoping to join the badminton club, that sounds interesting...
