I think FF 3.5 has been giving a lot of ppl problems. I reverted to IE8 which, to me anyway, seems ok now.

You could try Opera, it's fast.

Is there a good reason not to revert back to the previous version?

    Chrome.
Zippy little number. The stable Beta channel version is even better.

Im starting to see the similar problems. Ive been using FF for years but all of a sudden w i turn the laptop on it takes a long time to open FF the first time. Id imagine if i turned off some extensions it would speed up but they are the same extensions i have used for over 2 years so its a step back in usability...

I just installed chrome to see if that is much better.

Let us know what you think. I had a similar problem with slow-FF-loading on my laptop. Moved to Chrome and I love it. Loads and browses quickly, each tab is run as an individual program so that if one site crashes or loads slowly, it doesn't affect the other tabs. Built in spell check. Nine-mini-screen bookmarks as your homepage. New features coming all the time - shared bookmarks are next. You get the updates faster if you have the beta channel version. Can't praise it enough.

Recently after switching to Opera 10, after recent hassle with FF3.5 (it doesn't seem to like loading certain aspects of some sites anymore, and has half a gig of RAM sucked up within 20 mins).

So far, I'm quite liking Opera, though I still have to fall back on Firefox for some of the plugins I need to use.

Can you post you extensions that you have installed? Have you updated to firefox 3.5.2(this was meant to solve the problem you have) . It sounds like an extension problem. For example if you have skype installed see this thread https://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=439793&forumId=1

By the way a friend of mine had your problem and he fixed it by un-installing just one add-on don't give up on the fox just yet.

Try firefox in safe mode http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode and see if the browser speeds up....
plus other people have noted that this has worked for them https://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=381674&forumId=1

let us know if it helps

by the way Fasterfox 3.8.2Lite is an experimental extension

I was having problems with IE8 recently (trying to download a Jailbreak & Unlock for iPhone) and someone suggested that I should try Firefox.

I loaded the browser, Ver 3.5.2 and the problem was solved.

Any reason why I should dump it in favour of Google Chrome? I tried Chrome about 6 months ago & I had nothing but problems!

    Has it improved???

i didn't see the experimental thing and the slow down wasn't instantaneous.
the 'safe mode' didnt really help that much.

using chrome v3.0.195.10 for about a day now and its really impressed me, i might just stick with it for a while.

Don't forget to clean your firefox every so often. Now that your bookmarks and history is all writtten to a sqlite db it's important that it performs well.

    Try getting the hoover out,
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/13878

Won't help load times but I have noticed improved interface response times. Also there are more .sqlite files in a firefox profile then just places.sqlite, but places does contain the bookmarks and history info and it is more susceptible to fragmentation.

Secondly I got this tip recently: That adjusting the pref shown in the page below to a more sane value has improvements for tab switching, creation, deletion, and even flash plugin operation. Although this page does the change for a different reason. It was the only one I could find on google which described how to change this pref.

none of these tips fecking work. I've got 3 office machines at work that absolutely choke on 3.5, even in safemode, and all that shyte. I resorted to going back to 3.0 and they are all running great again. I couldnt tell you what went wrong with 3.5, I just know something has.

Can't remember the actual specifics but there were many problems.

I work for a large semi-state & the problems & system failures were so commonplace that staff were told not to replace IE with Chrome & anyone who had already done so were told to uninstall Chrome!

A browser worth a look at if sys resources are scarce is K-Meleon. Shares some similarities with Firefox, but slimmed down.

Do you use noscript to stop javascript/flash running all over the place on background tabs?

Currently I've got about a hundred tabs to various real sites open in firefox 3.5.2 with no problem with speed on a 2 yr old laptop. (700 MB memory used by firefox though)

    Midori is a nice lightweight.
It uses the webkit engine used by Safari.

I am fond of Lynx and w3m too though :P

Opera gets my vote, Chrome 2 has two many features missing.

Security and stability update available now for Firefox. 3.5.3 is the new version. Installing now so I have no idea if it's any better but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

    EDIT:

Update: Seems to have done the trick unless there is some coincidence.... Boards is flying along for me the way it should be. Fingers crossed!
