I'm sure this has been covered loads of times lads but I was wondering if anybody could post on any information about Open DNS Servers. I've seen it linked to something about safer internet surfing and what not but really haven't a clue.

    Cheers for any help people.

I use OpenDNS. It's really cool, fast and never seems to be down.

    This is their website:

This may sound stupid but open dns would that mean that say it would bypass eircoms block on the PB? or does this not effect that. What about other things like torrents any advantage using open dns?

    Thanks

Not sure what PB is. What a DNS server does is...

You type in "www.rte.ie" in your broswer. The browser goes

"wtf? I don't know how to find that computer on the internet, all I have is a name, I don't have the address".

So it say "I know what, I'll mention this name to my old pal the nameserver and I'll see if he can tell me what address I need to go to."

The nameserver matches up the name www.rte.ie with the corresponding computer address on the interweb (89.207.56.140) and tells your browser to head there.

See here for a nice graphical explanation:

The advantage of using OpenDNS is that it may do all this faster, and also if you put family filters on, it will pretend it can't find the name for you if it's something like www.xxxpornocannibals.com.

    Pirate bay (PB)
thanks for that love the ?cartoon really good at explaining it. So would it bypass eircoms pirate bay block (not that i'm with eircom just like to know if this was an option ) Also what happens to the cartoon when a torrent application asks to go on the net ? (would this stop you been found out by your isp?)

    Thanks in advance

(i'm guessing that it won't cause it seems too easy)

Yeah, this method still blocks TPB. A proxy can easily by-passes eircom's block.

You can be found out anyway, regardless weather you got the torrent from TPB, Mininova, etc etc.
