will it be possible to make custom ones as with the wallpapers?

Seemingly only the PS3 SDK which is also used to make games will give you the ability to make dynamic themes. This means only sony developers and the like.

even if it were real, KZ2 one just looks like scenes from the game. an animated theme specifically made for the XMB is a different story altogether

its entirely likely there will be custom ones i mean there's a guy eager to have people think he's done 1 already. or peeps will probably demand it like that SDK

If you can't access the links from the internet browser on the PS3 itself, then you can save the themes (which will be of the file type 'theme.p3t') onto a removable hard drive or an mp3 player using your PC. Just make sure that if you're saving the files somewhere that you put them in a folder called THEME on your hard drive/mp3 player. Then when you want to use the theme go into the settings menu of the PS3 and find the 'Theme' section. Go into 'Theme' and select 'Install' to install the themes you have on a removable hard disk, or if the themes are already installed on the PS3 you can just select them like you do for the default themes from the list on the bottom right.

Most of the websites that have PS3 themes are PS3 browser compatible, so you can just click the link and it'll download to your PS3 and install straight away. Then you just have to choose the theme from the settings menu.

Afrika theme is very nice. Bit hard to see the menu text though.

Is there anything else free in the Jap or US stores worth picking up?

Yeah had the same issue with seeing the background text aswell, however if you go into the theme settings and select the brightness and lower it to -2 then the menu text is a lot more visible.

Am the only person who thinks that dynamic themes are pointless?

Just as pointless as any other wallpaper or theme I would have thought. I mean there will be ones available for free (like the Afrika theme) so it's not like you'll even have to buy any if you want to have some. Who doesn't like sparkles?

Forgot to say it, but i was referring to the premium ones :P

Well in fairness, they take a lot more time to make then regular themes so it makes sense that most of them will be 'premium only'. There's a post up on the US PS Blog from PixelJunk developer Q games all about how they made the sparkle theme for the XMB and they describe the creation process a little bit. Considering the themes can only be made by developers on the PS3 SDK and aren't just marketing material cropped in Photoshop I understand why money is being charged. I think that there is a market there for good quality themes. There are people out there spending real money on virtual clothes for PlayStation Home ffs! I'm considering buying a theme if the right one appears on the store. So long as good quality free themes are available from time to time I have no complaints.

problem is theyre likely to be just based on games. which is ok, i DON'T wanna see a tynchy strider theme for instance. wonder what official themes would be outside of gaming, if any are.. but as long as we can't do custom ones the official ones will be of (overly) popular fodder
