    Hi,

Does anyone know of a standalone DVD recorder, if any, that could back up my DVD collection into a variety of file types that could be transfered from the DVD recorder to my PC?

I have tried searching for such a device but i am unable to determine if it will do what I want.

    Thanks

I'm not sure that Hollywood would be happy if one could just "back up" dvd's in the manner that you wish.

For what it's worth, mine does do dvd to (internal) HD backup, and DVD copy, but not to a file system, and it won't backup copyright dvd's. I.e. it will backup your camcorder dvds or recorded tv programs.

You are better off looking at Computer based "backup" solutions.

    Oh rite, thanks anyway.

Can you or anyone suggest a good computer based backup software?

I have tried using handbrake, the quality is very good but it takes nearly two hours to copy a thirty minute episode.

Are you using Handbrake on the mac? MacTheRipper is also a good program. There is also an app for linux that concat's the vob files from dvd's. Can't remember the name if it off the top of my head.

Regarding timings, they are entirely dependent on what settings you select.
