Fixed Gear Build - please help!

    Hello!

I just found a really nice frame in my grandfathers shed, and want to convert it to a fixed gear.

I've looked at other threads on boards, but I'm a complete new-comer to fixed gears and I really don't know what everyone is on about!

I need to replace the back wheel anyway, so would I be able to buy a wheel that is fixed already? Can you buy fixed gear wheels in Dublin?

Am I over simplifying things by assuming I just need to get the back wheel and a shorter chain and Im ready to go?

    Please help if you can...
    Thanks

You can get a rear fixed wheel for 70 (with a sprocket and lockring) in City Cycles on Blackhall Place, cheapest place so far in the city I think.

You are definitely over simplfying things alright. Have a read of this
    http://sheldonbrown.com/fixed-conversion.html
And I mean read it, not skip over it. Read through it fully, and use the glossary if there are terms you dont understand.

Look at the dropouts on the old frame too, to see if its possible to convert.

Once you've had a good read of the sheldon page, and also searched this forum (others have asked about conversions before), then come back with specific questions, people will be happy to help.

And mind your fingers around the chain when spinning the wheels on your bike stand. There's a gruesome picture on the Sheldon site somewhere that shows what can happen.

I saw that alright, I'll keep my digits well clear.

Well the good news is that I have horizontal drop-outs
I'm gonna give the bike a good clean up and then get busy
Thanks for recommending that shop, I'll pay them a visit as soon as I can

    Now back to sheldon brown...
