I've done a reinstall of Windows XP. Before starting I took a copy of contents of the Firefox profiles folder (hidden files visible) and in particular text files called signons2 and signons3

The first thing I tried with the new installation was to copy the signons3 file to the new profiles folder (am running 3.5 in both old & new) - didn't work

Then I tried copying all the old profile contents to new profile - didn't work

Please tell me if and how I can recover the old bookmarks & passwords

Are you sure Firefox is using the Profile you copied and not a default blank one?
In your profiles folder now is there only one or two profile folders?
They have names like hucp2yb2.default and a profile.ini file which should have that folder name in it too, if Firefox is using a new defalt profile it will just have the default bookmarks, all you need to do is set your old profile as the default.
I usually rename the new profile with the old ones name.

You might want to get Xmarks addon (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410) or maybe experiment with Weave (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10868) which saves bookmarks and passwords on a server for ya.
