New setup recommendations

I'm looking to get something going for when my wife or I am away with work. I have been experimenting with skype on the desktop at home with Fring or Nimbuzz on my N95. We also have a netbook that I will setup once I decide on an approach.

I've been finding a really annoying problem with skype. I've a bluetooth dongle & a nokia handsfree headset that I can setup and get working fine initially. However as soon as you sign out and back in skype resets to the default windows device. Gah.

I'm looking for recommendations and advice on a setup please.

With Fring and Nimbuzz on a N95 you can use SIP services.
That's what Blueface or Freespeech are offering.

    I know Blueface is a Fring partner : http://www.blueface.ie/fring/

    That could do the job

    Anyone use Gizmo?

I'm initially only really interested in the free call setup but intend to possibly expand to using it for most calls at home.

At the moment we make all our calls on the mobile...between ourselves...parents...friends...etc. We've got packages that include pretty much all our calls though any that are made in the evening are candidates for using the pc/voip phone.

From the N95 point of view could I potentially end up better off by buying a data bundle and making my calls via voip?

IMHO: SIP-based VOIP over mobile broadband is a horrible experience, it's fine via WiFi or perhaps a wireless ISP, but otherwise don't even bother.

Having overcome my N95 wifi problems (hadn't disabled the power saving so the connection was woeful) I got Fring working last night. I've setup two skype accounts for now - one I'll use on the N95 and one on the desktop. I was able to make calls with pretty good quality via the wifi. However, as previously suggested, when not using the wifi the call quality nosedived.

My biggest gripe now is that skype will not maintain the audio settings once you sign out/reboot. It will work perfectly with my Nokia BH600 bluetooth headset once you go to the configuration and point it at it.

I'm still open to alternatives to skype. As it's free it's suited to my testing needs at the moment but, having looked at their call charges for skypeout, I think there are probably better options. I would also possibly move to a SIP system in the future in order to move calls away from the desktop.

There is one good reason IMO or using SIP and not Skype .... choice of provider.

With SIP VOIP you have many different providers with different rates for different locations etc, and you can select whichever provider gives you the best offer. Any hardware you get will be useable will all the SIP providers.

If you go for Skype then you are confined to Skype only.
