Passport stamped or full-page visa on arrival? - Japan & Thailand

Hi all, I'm going to Japan and Thailand in the next few weeks, the passport is nearly full though so I was wondering do immigration in these countries just stamp the passport or insert a full page visa or arrival? I'll just be staying in both countries for 2 weeks each.
It's too late to apply for a new passport but I'd be ok if they just stamp the pages.
    Thanks

    Thanks a lot Tom.

I was in Japan last year and I have a lovely neat little sticker about 2x3 cm as a souvenir. It was stamped over at departure.

Ahhh, ramen, sushi... nihon ga daisuki yo!!!

Yeah, Japan is a square sticker, and a paper bit stapled on beside it, takes up about half a page

Nihon go ga dekimasu ka? :D
