There both 02s and around the same price nct tax ect, even the miles are the same,
only difference is the clio is sold by a dealer and the colt is private.

Any ideas guys, anyone had any experience with either.

    Colt for reliability

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,584 ✭✭✭✭Steve

Disregarding the relative merits of each car, if you buy from the dealer then you have the protection of the sale of goods act when buying from a dealer - basically means that there is an implied warranty with the car regardless of what they say.
There's no such protection when buying privately.

If all things were equal though, I'd go with the mitsi for reliability.

They're both either cars for women or souped up tins for hormaonaly driven teenage boys.

    Take yr pick.

When I went looking for a car, the Clio was my first choice. Other possibilities were Starlets, Civics and Corollas.

I ended up with a Mitsubishi Colt and do not regret it for a second! It's a 1998 but it flew through an NCT in August 08 and another service since with no problems. People literally do not believe me about how little petrol it uses - it's actually ridiculous.

One flaw - if you have things/people in the car, then the acceleration (especially for overtaking) is sh1te.

But for me, I couldn't ask for more in a first car. I honestly cannot pick out one other problem with it. I do have a friend with a Clio, and (yes it sounds silly, but) it just has no character compared to my Colt :)

That's just my own experience, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Colt to anyone.

The colt is a super lil car, I'd always rank it above all the other smaller cars, i'd put it up with the Civic. Well the older ones anyway.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Colt

i'd rather have a bit of both and have a clit.

Easy up on the comments lads, none of us wants to get banned :)

I'm driving '97 mitsi FTO at the mo and she's sweet as a kitten, reliability is good but it also depends on how well it was looked after.

Renaults are Renaults, IMO you can get good ones or you can get bad ones - you can never tell. I've yet to find a good one reliability wise. I reckon they the had a controls designer who had the adage 'if it aint broke, add more features'

I have to say, I'm surprised that a private 02 Colt would be sold at the same price as a garage 02 Clio? I would think that you should be able to argue the price of the 02 Colt down quite a bit.

As per my previous post, I'm very much pro the Colt :)

yeah im pretty sure i could knock 200 maybe even 300 off the price if iv got cash in hand, its hard to refuse cash when its being handed over to you.

I always thought that Colts were a lil bit more expensive than the likes of Clio's and the like. Same as Civic's

And try get more than 2 or 3 hundred off! It's worth a try, better in your pocket than theirs

    Get the colt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Strange one, I too drive a Mitsubishi, same as Steve, but in this case I'd probably go for the Clio.

    Clio is safer
    Nicer interior
    Nicer engine
    Seats are more comfortable
    Colt hasn't got electric windows
Colt is niosier than the Clio
The Colt is a reskin of a 1991 model

The Clio is actually quite reliable. Now so is the Colt, but I'd still get the Clio given the choice of the 2 cars.

On the other hand, I'd probably buy a Mazda 323 or Toyota Corolla before either of them.

Colm is 100% right, +1 for the Clio!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,822 ✭✭✭✭EPM

Another +1 for the Clio. It's pretty reliable, maybe not as reliable as the Colt, but has a better image, is nicer to drive and basically a more modern car

The Colt is bullet proof, but the engine is poor. It's thirsty for a 1.3 and very under powered. It won't go wrong though.
The Clio has a better engine, and would be more comfortable and better sound insulated. Either car is good, you won't really go wrong with either. Personally I'd go a class up and get a Civic.

    cheers for the help everyone..
anyone have any experience with the Renault clio expression model, is it better than the normal model or is it the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

That's a basic model, try and get an Extreme, Sport, Sensation or Dynamique model.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭|MarK|

The dynamic pretty much looks the same as the expression apart from the interior, is there any real difference in a 1.2 expression and a 1.2 dynamic.

I'm 21 and drive a Clio with just shy of 180bhp. Does this offend you? :D

Op, i'm slightly biased here but get the clio.
My first car was a 99clio, I wanted a colt but they were too expensive at time.. Looking back on it i'm delighted I got the clio.
Re:reliability comments, the clio is very reliable, despite what everyone thinks.

Pretty much all the clios have electric windows, remote locking, CD etc. but the higher models get things like remote stereo, front fogs, leather wheel, silvery bits on the dash, sunroof and elecric mirrors.
Renault always introduce special edition models. some overlap others. As far as I know Dynamique has most of the things listed above.

Some of the older Renault special editions were based on the expression models.
