    Quick Q's

1: Where can I do it around the Dublin or Galway area:
I rang my uni but they said they dont offer an evening course on it.
I know it has 7 modules each has a 2 hour exam.
2: I did Java and Matlab in college and I'm literate with word and excel and a general messer on computers so I just said I might aswell do it.

3 I have a month to spare before I head back to college and I am bored at home, just wondering how dear it would be, many classes, time length.

Reply Please a bored student :(

Perhaps, for somebody who has used a computer before.

The course is aimed at an introduction to computers, for people who have never used a computer before. I doubt such people would find the course "piss easy".

Universities won't do it. Some Institutes of Technology do ( I taught it in IT Blanchardstown), and a load of secondary schools do it in the evening.

Typically, it would be run over 12-15 weeks, generally a 2-3 hour class. That includes exam times, which would be 2 hours each. As far as I can remember, there were 6 exams. Could be wrong on this, though.

Start off on www.goldenpages.ie. Also have a look at www.ecdl.ie for the syllabus. TBH, if you are competent at computers, you can just walk in an do the exams. That's what I did.

    More info:

I rang a place in town
Organisation: Irish Academy of Computer Training
    Address:
    98 ST. STEPHEN'S GREEN
    Dublin 2
there is a place on dorset street also but they dont offer the advanced version or an (i think an after sales service like these do)

    Lovely helpful people there:

Its costs E895 but it is government funded so u get E200 back so it cost E695
    That E695 involves :
    1: teaching,
2: small class of 8, individual teaching help,
3: All cd's and books u need to do,
4; a ecdl card which gets stampted each time u do pass an exam, then after all 6 core are passed it is sent away and u get your cert.
5; A years after service help from ur teacher should u requiere any

NOTE(YOU CANNOT DO ECDL ADVANCED WITHOUT DOING ECDL CORE)!!!
This is what i was told from the girl over the phone.

there is a microsoft exam they offer which is the equivalent of the ecdl advanced she said.(Is this better or does anybody have advice )

note also in this centre u can go in and just sit the exams
it costs E95 for the card and
    E280 for the exam

so it would come to E385 so i might do this for the ecdl core
it is supposed to be piss easy so i might get the books and swot them for the core and then do the advanced with a teacher.

u need 15/20 right to pass

You can do the exams without having sat the course (that's what I did). However, you would need to ring ahead and schedule an exam.

I too am trying to do there exams without taking a course as I work when these classes are on. Does anyone know, is there any such thing as exam preparation.....something. I don't suppose there are exam papers. But I'm reading this ECDL book everyday, to know what kind of thing is asked and in what way would give me a bit of direction.

There are practice questions and tests on the internet. I used the Teach ICT site when I was doing the ECDL and found it very helpful: http://www.teach-ict.com/ecdl_home.html

And another one with more practice tests: http://ictstudent.co.uk/index.htm

You can also download the syllabus here:
    http://www.ecdl.ie/ec_content_and_syllabus.aspx?sm=19

It gives a very clear list of what you are expected to know for the exam that I found really useful as a sort of check list before the exam

You can purchase study at home CDs and books, then go and do the exams yourself.

However, the ECDL is intended as an introduction to computers, so if you are a beginner, these may not be the best options. There is no substitute for having a teacher in a classroom to help you and answer questions.
