We always just send the car for the NCT and then bring it to the mechanic if it fails. The mechanic then knows exactly what to fix. I think if you get (/book?) your second NCT within a month of the first one you get a half price NCT or something? Don't hold me to that. But I do think it's cheaper to do the NCT first in case the mechanic misses something and you end up having to go for the NCT again anyway.
