Hi, I was wondering is an apprenticeship a good idea?
would it be worth leaving school and starting one?
what would the apprenticeship wage be around?(not sure if it changes with different aprenticeships)
i was thinking something like engineering or motor mechanics or carpentary!!
is there any jobs for these kinds and would you be able to get higher and higher and get paid well!!

If I were you I would stay at school and do your Leaving cert because their is no work out their at the moment and then go onto do an apprenticship in college.

Between now and your leaving cert try and find a person to take you on when you decided to do the apprentice.

As far as I know you cannot but you best bet would be to ask your career guideance teacher.I know nothing about apprenticeship because I work in retail...
If you are thinking of doing an aprenticeship after your leaving cert your best bet would be to get a part time job in the area you want to do your apprenticeship working weekend and when off on school hoildays and when it comes to the time of doing your apprenticeship ask your employer would he committe to the fas scheme...
    Best of luck...

    I did.

I was offered an apprenticeship with CIE in the September of my 6th year so I took the apprenticeship and then went to the local VEC at night and did my LC. Can be hard on the brain because you will most likely spend 3 months in a DIT in your first year and then do night classes as well.

No f**king way. Not now. In the past, it would be okay, you could get away with it, but now, I'm seeing trade jobs going bust left, right and centre.

There's no guarantee you'll get one, and even if you get one, there's no guarantee the business will stay afloat. If it goes under, you'll be up sh|t creek. At least with the LC, you'll have half a chance of getting some job if the apprenticeship goes tits up.

If it's with family, and they think they have a good chance of getting jobs for the next year or so, maybe, otherwise I'd wait until you got your LC.

Finally, what trade do you want to work in? Whilst in school, learn some stuff about it, and try to get some experience in that trade, so when you do your LC, and go for the trade, you'll have something over the others going for the same apprenticeship.

probably something like engineering or motor mechanical..has anyone ever done an apprenticeship

Forget about it and focus on school, even back when there was work it was hard to get an apprenticeship. Now it's pretty much impossible, even if someone were to take you on you may not be needed in 3 months time.

Stay in school get your leaving cert then think about doing an apprentiship even ten years ago that would have been my advice.

Just think ten or twelve years down the line you get pi**ed off doing whatever trade you chose.

And you want to change career without a leaving cert an awfull lot of doors are closed to you straight away.

what martinr says you should heed! shur what age are ya? not done the leavin yet so il guess about 16. it might seem like a great idea now, but after a couple of months with early mornins, cold weather you might start to regret your decision!

maybe but if i do do a course i wont have to do it after the leavin cert and can go straight into whatever i started and get to a higher level quicker.. i know this takes time and effort but would it be worth it in the end of the day??

that i cant answer, but it might be a lot of hard graft studying two seperate things at the same time. ie. school in day and course at night - i wouldnt stick it anyway;)!
any (good) career guidance in school?

    nope none yet:eek:
dont think schools are really that great for career guidence !!

Instead of doing another course while in school, why not get some grinds or extra schooling and really concentrate on getting a great LC, that will open more doors for you then doing a FAS course. If you get a good LC then you can pick a college course in anything you want. Or if college isnt your thing you could walk into an apprenticehip or internship. your LC results will speak for themselves and will show you are a hard worker and have a good brain on your shoulders. If I could go back, thats what I would do ;) just my 2c anyway for what its worth.

Have to agree with that also, so its good to see your thinking ahead on your own, keep it up ;)

    Agree, dont quit school !!.

Get more feathers in your cap and do the leaving first at least if your trade flops you can go on to college.

Stay in school, do the leaving cert.
Apprenticships are scarce at the moment, but having a good LC will help, and let potential employers know that your serious about getting ahead.

whatever trade your interested in ask at companies involved in that area , apprentices are often taken on by large manufacturing plants too and they can be good to work for. Ask at your local FAS office for apprenticeship information they have booklets outlining details, and may know of local employers looking for apprentices
