    Hi Babyjames

There is an excellent sticky note with some FAQs at the top of this forum. It covers most of the payments you should look into and how to go about claiming those payments.

I'll try to outline the main payments you could apply for if you lose your job.

Jobseeker's Benefit: you should qualify for this payment, in which case you will most likely get the full personal rate of €204.30 per week. You can also get an increase for a qualified adult and an increase for qualified children with this payment. If you get a redundancy payment of more than €50,000 a disqualification period (between 1 and 9 weeks) can apply.

If your wife is getting Illness Benefit you won't be able to claim for a qualified adult and the increase for a qualified child will be split between you, so at the maximum rate this would total €26.

If your wife is not getting Illness Benefit and is not earning at the moment then you should get the increase for a qualified child - €26 at the maximum rate - and an increase for your wife as a qualified adult, which is €135.60 per week at the maximum rate.

Mortgage Interest Supplement: this payment can help with your mortgage interest and is designed to make sure your income doesn't fall below a certain level. The amount you receive is based on a means test and there are a number of qualifying conditions.

You should also look into claiming a tax refund - you can do this about 4 weeks after you become unemployed.
