Is it faster to get onto the N3 and follow it all the way.
Or else drive north on M1 up to Dunleer then turn onto road through Monaghan, Omagh etc.
Both about the same milage, but Im sure one route must be easier and less hassle?
    any feedback? thanks

Where in Dublin are you leaving from? Going to Donegal town?
And times of day for you travel also?

Definately go the M1, N4 is even better option than the N3, depending which side of county you are going to.

will be coming from sandyford south dublin on the M50 and going for Donegal town in the south of the county. Saturday. probably leaving here at 10 or 11am. coming home on the sunday then, leaving at midday.

thats interesting mise mise. I was wondering would M1 to dunleer and across through monaghan be quicker alright. I seem toremeber the last time I took the N3 route (few years back now) it was a terrible bottleneck alot of the way stuck behind tractors or trucks.

I'll see if anyone else has opinions but I think I will favour that route so far. north along M50, onto M1, and all the way north to dunleer, then head NW through monaghan, Omagh, into Donegal. couple of toll bridges but probably worth the extra 5euro each way to avoid the hassle of N3 if its still as narrow as I remember.

I tried the route on google route planner and it suggests either the M4/N4 through Mullingar/Longford/Bundoran route 272km @ 3hours 45mins

    OR

    the N2 route north on M1 through Ardee / Monaghan / Omagh etc 280km @ 3hours 39mins.

Only 8km or 6 mins in it according to google. but Im sure real world experiences are different...

I'd go for the M50 > M1 >N33 > N2 rout to the border, then the A5 to Omagh and cut across to Donegal town.
However be prepared for a poor rout from Monaghan to Omagh and an even worse one from Omagh to Donegal Town.
The rout from Dublin to North of Monaghan Town is all bypassed (The first village/town you'll hit is Emyvale in North Monaghan), but from Monaghan on you'll be on poor enough roads.

The N4 would be my 2nd choice....

Here's one that was made earlier.

FWIW, it took me 3.5 hours to get from Maynooth to Letterkenny (via M4/N4/N15/N13) last Friday afternoon, so the Google route planner's quote of 3 hours 45 minutes for Sandyford to Donegal seems wide of the mark, unless the M50 was backed up.

I'd generally recommend any road but the M1 for any destination south of The Gap, but not everyone agrees.
