I am racking my brains and it is driving me mad. Here are some clues. I think I'm correct with all of the below

    -New York accent
    -craggy features and gruff voice
    -short in stature
-has definitely played a helicopter pilot in at least one film
-has been in a few 1980s films. Was probably in his 50s or early 60s then. Not a leading man but a distinctive presence.

Anyone have any ideas who this is?

I don't know why I thought of this guy, but could it be Scott Glen?

Not any of those, but thanks. I think this person is a smaller name than Roy Scheider, Harvey Keitel or Ernest Borgnine but has appeared in some big films.

I am not too familar with Morrow or Glen but looking at thier imdb profiles I don't think he would share much in common with them

Michael Ironside? If he's bald and pock-marked

Richard Crenna is a name that spring to mind. Not specifically a helicopter pilot, but was in a lot of them.

    Joe Pesci?

I thought about it some more over lunch and now know the actors name :D Re: the suggestions, Richard Crenna is way too tall. Joe Pesci is a pretty good suggestion however Pesci is younger and rounder than this person and is just a different type of actor.

He flew a helicopter in one film but I don't think he'd be known as a helicopter pilot so that was probably misleading

Maybe I won't reveal who it is straightaway. Here's a pretty good hint. In a very well known 80s film his character is killed immediately after saying "You can't do that"

Has to be the great Dick Miller star of two of my favorite films of all time, Tales Fromn the Crypt: Demon Knight and Terminator. I'm fairly certain he was a helicopter pilot in Explorers, watched it the other week for the first time in years and I think I saw him.

Edit: Sorry, just saw that Karl all ready guessed correctly. Still half asleep so forgive me for reading just the first post.

He was good in Gremlins too, although two things that always annoyed me - 1.) had he run into other gremlins before in Korea or was it just the crazy ramblings of a man affected by war? 2.)
he looked to have suffered a pretty bad death in the 1st movie, only to come back in the sequel 9And a lot saner as well)

I put spoilers just in case some poor individual out there is yet to see Gremlins :D
