    Hi

I bought an external hard drive but when i put into my playstation is wont show up. I know playstation is fat32 so the external must be ntfs.
Is there a way to format the external on the playstation or does it have to be done in vista.

    thanks

You need to format the ext drive to FAT32. Try it through vista but it probably wont work since FAT32 isn't the real deal on Vista.

I used free partition tools you can download to format my ext drive via the PC.

Once formatted you need to structure your folders to:

    Videos
    Music
    Pictures

That'll have ya working away in no time. Check out the official PS3 website forums for more information if you get stuck. but that should do the trick for you.

The utility I used is called Swisknife but again this is window. If you search google for Fat32 and MAC hopefully should help out. Did a quick search and I found this link

I formatted my external hdd. Converted the file type to FAT 32. I created 3 folders in theexternal hdd by the names videos, music and pictures. I tried plugging it into the ps3 slim and the console wouldnt recognize the drive.
What do you think is the problem?

    N.B: I have a ps3 slim. I used the software swissknife to create a FAT32 partion.
I have 2 partions on the external hdd. One is NTFS and the other is FAT32. Do you think that is the problem? Do you think i should convert both the partion's to FAT 32? ( i was under the impression, that the fat 32 partion would be detected )

I just used "fat32format" to convert the whole drive into one large Fat32 drive so my external drive for movies is a 500gb Fat32 one.

Haven't come across that particular problem before but it may be worth changing them both to FAT32, if you can that is, just to see if it can recognize the drive.

They are generally very reliable but if I was going to spend my money I'd probably get this one http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=420463 spec is roughly equivalent but the price is not. Anyway whichever one you choose WD are a pretty good brand.

No worries I recommended it to one of the lads I work with and he's seem thrilled with it. I would have bought it only mine was an emergency purchase and had to buy that day to back up my PS3 as it was behaving oddly. I backed up and put in a spare HD and P3 is now back to working as before.
