Are bands on the way out

It's definately harder to find work now.
The same money is not there anymore.
Why would a publican pay 400-600 for a band when he could pay 150-200 for a dj. And in the 18 - 30 age bracket, let's face it, the vast majority want a dj anyway
I know there will always be people who want their live music, but it seems to me that market is getting smaller all the time.
As a musician, it is a worry, the future doesn't look very bright
Any opinions ( or cheering up :D) would be great

Because the ten other bars in the town who go for the cheaper DJ option will soon find their customers getting insanely bored. The right answer is 'both'.

Are bands on the way out? Only the bad ones, hopefully. But the good old celtic tiger days are well and truly over, I think it's just a 'levelling' out process tbh.

bands have alot less work, thats without a doubt... there is a mad scramble for wedding work at the moment, but customers are cutting back on their wedding expenses too. There are also quite a few chancers doing the pubs. Bars and hotels want the big sound, but only have to pay 1 person... therefore everyone uses backing tracks, everyones at them up here. 2 pieces are starting to appear at weddings now. You'd need to go abroad...I know a guy out in Lanzarote and hes flat out playing, but again, its just him and a guitar... and he is really good. Your other alternative is trad, but again, you'd have to travel.

I'm sure you're right. The bad ones will go first but do you think the good bands will continue to find find consistently.
The band i'm in is only ok at best. So i'm not really surprised we're finding it harder
but i do know some top bands who are finding it very hard and will prob end up splitting
    it's a real shame

The good pubs will stay busy, in fact some would be loathe to report an increase in punters. The simple fact is that bar owners are unscrupulous when it comes to saving a buck, will always look for the cheaper option regardless of any economic situation. 2pc bands have been the norm for years now, why? Cheaper!
So take the local publican's sob story with a pinch of salt, before the recession it was 'the smoking ban' and before that it was the cops fault for 'clamping down on the drink driving'

When you charge €6-7 a pint, you really can't cry wolf when business drops tbh.

wouldnt agree wih that at all. i think its like everything. its like a circle. the live music will come back eventually. when a few bob comes back in to the country. and if publicans want people in ther pubs they should get off their arses and do somthing to entice the punters in , instead of loking at the doors and hoping they will come in. a pub in my area has been selling all pints for €3.50 for a month or so, they have music every saturday and sunday night and they are flying it. people want value for money now,.
