I was wondering what the criteria for receiving a scholarship in UCC was? Has anyone received one? I got 570 in my Leaving Cert this year and am doing Commerce with French. Do i have a good chance?

I was wondering the same thing. I got 600 but I'm doing med so I wonder is it based on LC points or HPAT? Anybody know?

I'd say you would have a strong chance of getting an entrance scholarship from the Commerce Faculty, think you may have to apply though, I'm open to correction.

    @ Wireless101:

So many of ye get 600 points in Medicine that it's hard for them to give scholarships to everybody, but if you got 600 points in the Leaving Cert this year and you were NOT repeating you've a good enough chance I'd imagine.

    Hope this helps!

No need to apply, you'll get a letter in November sometime. You should get one alright, unless the change the cut off point. Not too sure about the situation with Med.

Tis' handy out though, two grand is definetley a good return on studying.

In the current financial climate that UCC finds itself, I can't help but think that the number of scholarships will be drastically reduced this year.

I'm not sure if it's the same this year, but in the past few years to get an entrance scholarship to UCC you had to get 570 points or more in the LC and be in the top number of students in your faculty. It is a max 12 per faculty with 60 scholarships in total.

So I would say in the Commerce faculty you would have a good chance of gaining the entrance scholarship, as the majority of the students with such high LC points often go for Medicine etc..

Wireless101...in the link below it outlines the requirements of a Med student to get one of the scholarships...I did the LC a few years back now so I'm not really aware of how the HPAT works but it looks like its a combination of LC + HPAT results.

There will be little or none Id say!

There are a max of 12 scholarships per department in UCC. They seem to be breaking the scholarships in two for med; 6 for best leaving and best hpat and 6 for best combined score.

This is from the UCC website:
In the case of CAO applicants to Medicine from 2009/10 the maximum achievable score will be 860 points: 560 as the maximum score in the Leaving Certificate Examination (after adjustment) and 300 as the maximum score based on the HPAT-Ireland Test. As the score levels achievable in the HPAT are an unknown quantity there will be a pilot scheme for the entrance scholarships awarded in Medicine in 2009 based on either:
    a) The scholarship fund for the programme (approximately six scholarships) is to be divided between all those on maximum LCE and HPAT score.
    or
    b) The scholarship fund is awarded to the top six students based on their combined LCE and HPAT score.

So does this mean that if you got 600 in the leaving you would definitely get something?

i'd say there'll be a fair few people with 600 points in med so i'd say they'll either do random selection or maybe start with people with the most amount of a1's; 7 or 8 a1's etc

If there are 12 per department then surely some scholarships will go to 6oo pointers in pharmacy and dentistry also. ie not all 12 scholarships in the college of Medicine and Health will go to the med students.

Correct me if I'm wrong though!

Just a quick question.....I got 580 points in my LC this year and was heading for medicine but didnt get in. I am REPEATING this year for personal reasons. Would I still be elligible for a scholarship from the uni as I did get 580 this year although Im repeating?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 222 ✭✭ALincoln

What??? You obviously have to go the university before you are eligible for a scholarship!

Schols aren't out until relatively late in the year; late November last year if I do recall.

No, you won't i'm afraid. Repeats don't qualify as far as I know.

Thanks for the reply! Im sure you prob understood what I am trying to say, but just to clarify, I got 580 points in the 2009 Leaving Cert exam. This was not as a repeat. I am repeating the Leaving Cert for the 2010 exam though. I got 580 points NOT as a repeat. Seeing this is what I got first time round I would have thought they would consider me for a scholarship? This is just a general query like for next year.....

They would base the scholarship on the results you apply with, presumably Leaving Cert 2010 results. Not what you happened to get the first time around. I think repeats are disqualified in general.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 222 ✭✭ALincoln

    1. If you fail to get onto a course, you are generally not a candidate for a scholarship.

    2. To be eligible for a scholarship, you have to be a registered university student.

I've heard that they're being done by application this year as opposed to automatically being distributed on exam resutls, anyone else hear this?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 824 ✭✭✭Nova_era

Hopefully, about time they started taking note of the people that they hand out thousands to.

This is certainly the case for the college undergraduate scholarships. Although the details have yet to be updated on the college website. I wonder if it will still be mainly based on acheived grades or the required personal statement.
This new process must represent a huge amount of additional work for each college, shifting through the hundreds of applications. I don't envy them.

If you have high enough grades to be considered a excellent personal statement shouldn't really be a problem.

Proof if ever there was any needed, that the leaving cert points system needs to be abolished. Anybody who gets 580 points should not only get their preferred course, they should also get a medal.

You know she said it was a query for next year, right?
She wasnt saying give her the scholarship now.

Just so you know, last year im pretty sure you had to get 600 pts in medicine to get a scholarship. 580 def didnt get one.

And you cant get one based on repeat results as you probably know

    Anyone heard anything?

As far as I know by way, the med schol is based not only on LC points now, but a combination of hpat and LC points.

I would imagine it would vary depending on your college. In previous years the registration and records office distributed them but now its up to the relevant college. In the college of arts they require an application which is due this week!

Were arts people emailed about it? The website looks like this http://www.ucc.ie/calendar/scholarship/sch002notavailableatthistime.html
so its kind of hard to know what the story is.

In Arts I don't think 70% or more in one subject counts as a 1.1. I’m pretty certain it has to be combined. There is specific criteria detailing what is a 1.1 in the college calendar. For example in some cases 68% can be enough. I would imagine those receiving such a competitive scholarship would have grades in excess of 70% but I would be only speculating.

Hiya, Just wondering does anyone know can you get a shcolarship for a research masters? I'm in 4th yr nutritional science and got offered to be taken onto a research project next year by one of my lecturers. Got awarded scholar of science last year and have gotten 1.1's since first year would I have a hope? I also have good relationships with my lecturers in the dept which might help if it's a committee decision no?4
