I'm looking at picking up a land cruiser for personal use, mainly for bringing around a load of sports gear (have a CR-V and a Skoda Superb now, thinking of ditching both of them for this).

Most of the Land Cruisers I see are Commercials though (i.e. no back seats or windows). This is fine, but I'm wondering can I just buy this and use it for personal use? What road tax/insurance do I pay? etc.

You sure? Even if I don't have a company to register it to? Seems a bit....convenient to me.

No you don't need anything like a company. It is just registered as a commercial vehicle. Lower tax and you are not insured to have anyone in the back.

The only advantage you would have if you were a VAT registered company or sole trader, is that you would be able to claim the VAT back on the cost of it.

But as a Joe Soap. You just pay buy it, tax and insure it as a commercial and drive away.
