No :pac: Have you tried sharing your external drive under the computer to which it is usually connected? Then its contents (or a specific directory, like that containing your music) would be available to other machines on your LAN.

    OR

If you have iTunes installed on the computer to which the external HD is connected and the iTunes library is on this drive, enable sharing of your library through iTunes. Need to enable this setting on your MacBook as well though.

thats what i used to do with my imac, but then i sold my imac, and i cant seem to find a cost-efficient alternative.

I would love a mac mini, but the only thing i need it for is to stream and nothing else. What would be the base requirements for what i need?

All i want to do is be able to stream music to my macbook, through itunes

Not the cheapest option available, but the Airport Extreme Base Station has a USB port which will allow you to connect a hard drive and share it out on the network, so you can stream music, etc to your MacBook. It's also a fine router to boot.

if i were to buy this http://store.apple.com/ie/product/MB321B/A/AirPort-Express-AirTunes?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg&mco=ODIyMzMxMA

And connect it to just my hardrive, not any phone lines or anything, would it still work?

No, it wouldn't. The USB port on the Express is limited to printers only (stupid, but that's the way it is). The USB port on the Extreme, allows a hard drive to be connected, the one on the Express does not.

That's a bit ancient so I'm not 100% sure but I think it also only has printer support. You need one of the new "square" Airport Extreme units (which I think has had 3 different "generations" so far), like this one:

Another solution is something like this:

You can connect it to your existing router and share out two (or more - it works with a USB hub) hard drives or printers. There are some major caveats with this one though, as it runs a custom variation of Linux and can be a bit trickier to set up but it works well. I had one for ages.
