I dont even know if this is the right forum and I am sorry if it is not. My best friend of 33+ years is moving to Canada tomorrow with her 3 kids. Friends since we were 3 years old.Her husband went out 3 months ago. They had a company that went bust due to the down turn and could not find any other work. I cant help but feel very angry that I am losing my best friend from my daily life due to the irrensponsibility of the banks and property developers who caused this mess. Not bloody fair.

We spoke on the phone a few minutes ago and we had to hang up as we were both crying so much. I will miss her so much. I know we will talk on the phone, e-mail etc and I can visit but it is just not the same. We both feel heartbroken. I really hope all works out for her and her family. I would hate if my husband and I had to move due to this bloody mess. When will it all end...

What did the Banks and property developers have to do with your friends business going bust? Obviously the market wasn't there because if it was it would still be running.

But yeah I can feel your pain, my best friend moved home 3 years ago and I still miss him to be honest. I didn't even know him for that long either (5 years) so I can just imagine what its like for you.

    Hi Caroline,

That's awful. I'm in Canada for the year myself, it's a truly lovely place, but I know what it's like to miss people.

Video calls and Skype are great, and it doesn't take that long to get here from Ireland if you wanted to visit. It takes a ten hour flight for people to get to me here, and I'm in the farthest point from Ireland,

Its just a hop over the pond!

I'm in the kind of opposite situation - I left all my family and friends behind in Canada to come be unemployed in Ireland

I'm actually visiting my parents right now and the amount of help wanted signs is unreal. I can't believe I'm getting on a plane to come back. Argh!

Anyway. What I'm trying to say is, your friendship will survive the distance. It's not like the old days before skype and webcams and rather reasonably priced long haul flights (flyglobespan.com). So you'll be fine, and having a reason to visit the land of bargain quality isn't the end of the world.

I'm not so sure. Being in two different places with different time zones is gonna have an impact. My friend moved back to Tripoli, Libya which is only like 2 hours difference but I haven't spoken to him over the phone in all that time. Jesus when I think about it thats freaking weird. My best friend and I haven't actually talked to him over the phone since he left. Had a few MSN conversations and a few Bebo comments but yeah we don't keep in touch that much.

Eh, tons of businesses have gone bust due to the recession caused by the banks, developers and government. And Im not just talking construction businesses, every single business has been hit by the effects of this recession and the drop in consumer spending.

I hear ya OP. Two of my college friends are abroad - long haul, one in Vancouver. I miss them so much and I know everyone does. They can't come back, there are no jobs in our industry (engineering). I'll probably have to go too eventually. It fills me absolute rage that not only will I probably have to leave sooner or later, but also that while I'm here my tax is paying for the whole bloody mess. I don't see it getting any better any time soon and I hate the fact that the ordinary people are paying for the developers who are mostly still living their high lifestyle.
That said, email is a god send and Skype. Plus I supose you can look at it from the point of view that you now have someone to go and visit in Canada.
Still though. I know how you feel.

In fairness families are being split apart with people emigrating I don't think losing a frien equates with that but I do feel your pain. Communication technology is fantastic nowadays and with a web cam or whatever yer practically in the same room!

Thanks for all your support guys. Cathrina was like a sister. We were so close.

It is sicking the mess that we now have and all down to the greed of some. I am self employed and work very long hours and the down turn is clearly seen. I work harder for less each month and do worry if I can weather this storm. My husband is also self employed so it is double worry.
