I've got an opportunity to get a hundred+ quality backlinks to my website.
I want to make the best of them so my question is ......

    Would 100 backlinks to ...... www.sub.mydomain.com

be as valuable as 100 backlinks to ...... www.mydomain.com ?

There's no absolute answer to that question. 100 quality links from motoring websites to your dating subdomain site might not have a lot of value...

Ignoring the types of websites etc I just want to know if I will diminish the seo value of the backlinks by having them pointing to a sub domain rather the main domain.

If the sub-domain doesn't have a 301 redirect to your main site, then it seems reasonable to think that the vast majority of the value of those links will be assigned to your sub-domain page.

Thats really not correct Moonstar. Read RedC's reply carefully - if the links have no value - or even ifthey have value but no relevance, it might not pass any authority through.

Backlinks and authority are often treated as a single bullet point amongst page titles, h1 tags (God forbid), alt tags etc as a point of SEO but its probably the most detailed and complex.

Yes of course, the value of the links in the context of that site is an unknown quantity.

..indeed.. and for competitive keywords, far more important for ranking than on-page elements.

Google always states that they treat subdomains and domains "almost" the same. To understand how they treat subs and full domains differently it pays to look at how parasite hosting (e.g. viagra spam on .edus) passes trust between sub and domain, or vice-versa.

Generally speaking 100 link to a sub or a full domain will yield similar returns, all things being equal. Generally speaking...

eirman, is your main site on a sub-domain already?
    e.g. myblog.blogspot.com

If not, and your site is on "mydomain.com", then it seems like the results will depend on whether there is the same or different content on the sub-domain site(s) when compared with the main site.

Thanks, that's the info I needed.

Moonstar, the site is not on a sub-domain at the moment but it would make sense to have all the backlinks pointing to separate, more relevant subdomain.
