I've started drinking Earl Grey tea over the past few days. Don't really know what to make of it. Sometimes I like it, sometimes i don't. Sometimes it's better with milk, sometimes better without.

I'm losing sleep over this. Any thoughts?

I love it - no milk and try a couple of brands before you settle on an opinion. I like twinings - some of the cheaper ones (and others) have a very strong, sort of acrid bergamot flavour which is not good. It should be delicate. For me, its a refreshing brew for the afternoon or evening - I wouldn't reach for it first thing (strong irish breakfast all the way).

I like it a lot, without milk, I let the tea steep in the cup for 3-5min

I like it as a once in a day change from my usual Barry's tea or Nescafe coffee.

Great in the evening after dinner, supposed to help with digestion. I just use the twinnings brand without milk

I love Earl Grey. I usually use two teabags of the Twinnings, although I think it's just that brand; I've had other brands where one bag is enough.

    And milk.

    It's so lovely.

I have a tea shop supplier down here that does leaf tea. I've become a convert. Use a basket diffuser for single cups and it's no more inconvenient than a teabag, but about a million times better. They do a 'girlie grey' that's similar to Twinings Lady Grey. The best thing about it is being able to blend the drink you want though - I like my tea in a 3/4 pint mug in the mornings, so I drop in the diffuser and depending on the sort of day it is, I might blend a spoon of irish breakfast or english breakfast with a spoon of earl grey or girlie grey.

They do flavoured black teas including one called 'Melbourne Breakfast', which has hints of vanilla and pipe tobacco and spice and it's really excellent.

(The only problem about drinking leaf tea is that some visitors may think you're being pretentious. I have a caller who now says 'I'll just have the peasant stuff', meaning a Twinings Irish Breakfast teabag. Irritates the bejesus out of me, especially seeing as a box of 100 of those 'peasant' teabags is nearly $9!!)

It's unreal. I don't even tell people I'm brewing using leaves. Most of the time they don't notice the difference.

Another alternative is Twinings Lady Grey - i think its a better tea than the basic earl grey. Its Earl Grey with orange and lemon. Should be able to get it in most big supermarkets
