Would it be ok to run a component and optical cable outside the house about 10-15m run.

Want to connect sky hd box to bedroom projector.

Would i have to use trunking or would it be ok exposed like coaxial cable?

Will i be making a big hole to fit a component cable(three cables) and optical cable through it?

You could make up your own component cables to save the hole size but even if you don't then pushing the cables through one at a time should limit the size of the hole required. Just watch out for tight bends when it comes to routing the optical cable.

If the cables are not waterproof/outdoor then you should probably consider watertight trunking. I assume there is no possibility of keeping the cables indoors? Just imagine what water could do via refraction if it got into that optical cable!!!

You could always talk to Sky about a multiroom HD package and see what's on offer. Mind you, they are not great on 'existing customer' offers.

    Hi crosstownk,

How would you make your own component cable?

Maybe i should just use stereo leads for audio instead of optical.

Anyone know where to get waterproof trunking.

Can you get it in short lengths and join them, so i could fit them in the car.

I ran a HDMI cable outside and it has been working with no problems for almost 2 years. I didn't use trunking (although I admit, I did worry about that).

    Hi 3rdDegree,

Did you use a hdmi splitter to use an extra hdmi cable?

How big a hole in the wall did you have to make.

How would you make your own component cable?

You can buy the cable and the connectors separately from the likes of Maplins or Radionics and make up the cables.

Hmmmm - and loose the option of 5.1/7.1 digital audio? I'd go with the optical if at all possible.

I'd imagine most electrical suppliers would be able to advise you on this.

Would this hdmi splitter work ok?

Is a hdmi splitter the same as a hdmi switch?

Says it can't handle HDCP but has skyhd in the listing.

If it's not HDCP compliant then it's a waste of time and will leave you worse off.

Ask the guys at www.curtpalme.com - they are well knowledgeable when it come to that sort of thing.

Think i will go with the 10m component cable and stereo leads.

Do you know what length of drill bit i'd need to get through a concrete wall and width of drill bit to fit the cables through?

    Would 300mm X 12mm work

450 long for a cavity wall. 12mm will do fine.

local hardware shop will stock them.

Cheers suppose i'll have to make a few holes to fit the head of the hdmi through it.

Is there some filler you can get if there's a gap left?

How about a splitter like this one that will allow you to split the audio and give you 2xHDMI out. It's also HDCP compliant.

Agreed. Not cheap but if you want the full benefit of HD from that projector then it may well be worth the money in the long run!
