    Hi all,

I'm getting married in Italy next summer and am having a civil ceremony.

I'm at a loss as to what readings etc we should have - I guess they can't be religious?? :p

Does anyone know any nice poems or something that would be suitable for us?

    Thanks!!
    Glowing

Hi, my OH has spent the last few evening getting ready our ceremony booklet for printing and we have a few lovely readings in it. Unfortunately i dont have them on my laptop but when he gets home from work I'll get him to send them to me and i'll forward them on. x

we had a 'hand ceremony', where you face your partner, and one of your readers says something about the hands, and how they represent love, and care, and so on. It's really nice.

"(Bride), please face (Groom) and hold his hands, palms up, so that you may see the gift that they are to you. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, for a lifetime of happiness. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes; tears of sorrow and tears of joy. These are the hands that will comfort you in illness and hold you when fear or grief fills you. These are the hands that will give you support and celebrate with you in your accomplishments.

(Groom), please hold (Bride) hands, palms up, so that you may see the gift that they are to you.

These are the hands that will hold you tight as you struggle through difficult times. They are the hands that will comfort you when you are sick or console you when you are grieving. These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the year, for a lifetime of happiness. These are the hands that will give you support as she encourages you to fulfill your dreams. "

Here are some more things you could do:

(some is very cheesy American, but some of the things are lovely! ;-))

just put 'civil ceremony readings' into google and there are literally hundreds of sites with suggestions.
We took some of these suggestions and then altered them to our own taste. We also did our own 'ceremony' part where we added to the legally required bit with our own vows, etc etc to pad it out, make it more personal and romantic.
be warned - Some of the suggestions online are a bit vomit enducing and overly saccherine sweet! but there are also some lovely suggestions, and as its a civil ceremony you can change it however you want - can't do that with first letter of saint paul to the corrinthians!
