Hi, I just got a call asking me to come in for a job interview in a small jewellery shop tomorrow. They really just need someone for the weekends and I could really do with the cash. I'm just wondering, is it ok to work part-time while studying medicine, do most people study over the weekends? I've always kept myself busy and am good at juggling my time. JHust wondering what people's opinions on tihs are!

Depends really on your circumstances. If you cannot survive without the money then you must have a job. I know a lot of people who work weekends while studying medicine so it is perfectly do-able. Also a lot of people I know tend to study in college during the week. Might help if you're working too as you'll get used to studying and working which we'll be doing a lot of in the future, lol.

I'd say for the first few years, as long as you were good at time management during the week, why not? It's definitely a situation I'll be in when I start, and I'd say many others too tbh. Not everyone would have other means of income so as long as you're not overstretching yourself, it's not at the cost of your studies and have some downtime, why not?

    Hey Piste,

I work part time during college. I work on the weekends, normally Friday evening and Saturday. Sometimes it gets pretty stressfull especially if you have a project due but you should def be fine for first year. Coming up to exams you will have to take a break from the work but you know that yourself :)

Send me a PM if you have any more questions especially if you have any questions regarding RCSI.

I worked all through college (24hrs/week) and got all honours so it's definately doable, just make sure you do study during the week and maybe a few hours on one of the weekend evenings.

I waitressed through med school, but finished up for sixth med. Waitressing wasn't dissimilar to being an intern. I learnt about time management, prioritising jobs and keeping punters happy.

    Difficult but possible.

Just make sure you manage your time well and never try to cram a semester's worth of work into a week.

I would advise the same to every medical student though, job or no job.

I say, give it a try and if it doesn't work. It doesn't work and at least you won't be wondering.*

*=That advice has the potential to work on almost everything in life.
