How do I sell my car?

    Hi,

Looking for advise on the best way to sell my car. I'm leaving the country next month so I want to sell my car. Have contacted a few garages who have offered way below what it's worth, in fact less than 50% less than what its worth. Don't want to be left with a loan once I sell the car so just checking what other options might be open to me.

Does anyone have advise on what I can do to sell it?

    Thanks,

You're using boards so you've obviously heard of the internet - Just advertise it online!

Hey..Well to be honest, the last thing garages want to do at the moment is take a car in without a trade which is probably why they are offering alot less than you value it.At the moment they only want to see cash coming in/stock going out,not the other why around! If you are not buying then the best thing to do is sell privatly(ie.advertise on a car website or autotrader) it may a while to sell but at least you can choose the price to try sell it at.

Why not try adverts.ie as it's linked to boards and is free! Then stick a link to your advert in your signature?

Post What make and model it is
    what year
    colour
    mileage
    spec/colour

what you've been offered so far

And you'll get opinions here regarding its value

You should tell us what car it is and we'll tell you the best place to advertise. For a decent car valued at 8k+ you should be looking at Carzone as opposed to adverts.

Before you advertise. Clean interior, wash/wax it, dress plastic trim & tyres. Also take clear photos of the car from as many angles as you can. Shouldn't cost you more than a couple of hours but it really helps your car stand out. Set the price at 90% of the cheapest similar model on carzone but be prepared to accept 80% if you want to shift it in a month.

Best of luck, it's not easy.

I used www.donedeal.ie and sold a very high mileage VW Caravelle in 8 hours. Costs €3 well worth a punt.

Just wondering why people want to know what my car is and what it's worth. I'd be glad to answer if you tell me why you need to know.

I've spoken with a couple of main dealers who have told me what my car is worth. On the other hand, I've spoken with Merlin who are offering pathetic money in comparison (less than 50%). Was just looking for advise but if anyone has asked these questions because they may be interested in buying here are basic details:

06 Megane Cabrio, 30k kilometers, full service history, silver with red leather seats, bluetooth installed.

Well your OP was asking for advice on how to sell your car quickly, i would have thought giving some details on the model spec etc would have been beneficial. And a lot of people over estimate the value of their cars, which results in your car sitting unsold. They're just basic details so people can give you advice.

Nice car but what do you think you need to get for it?

Won't be easy to shift unless the price is right...

Renault told me that they would sell it for €18k to €19k ideally but with the market the way it is, they are not buying at the moment.

I would aim to sell for around €15k. Checked out how much it would cost to bring one in and pay VRT and it works out more expensive so I hope that aiming it around there would be ok.

Having said that, I'd be open to offers.

if you try some of the links below, you can advertise with any of these and their all well known. Its a very bad time to be selling a car, especially one of your age.

Cheapest one on Carzone is €11k, lower mileage than yours, with leather. A cabriolet is not going to sell fast with winter approaching, and even slower because it's a Renault :(

To be honest very little over €10k seems to be shifting these days anyhow. It all seems to be credit union money sort of stuff. How long are you going away for? Can you afford to leave it lying up for a year and drive it when you come back? Can you let a friend / relative sell it for you and hang on until you get the price you want? If not and you need this car gone in the next month advertise it for a non-negotiable €9,950.

The reason we are asking is because you are claiming to know what's worth but you have nothing to base that off. The fact that a dealer said they wouldn't buy it means they can't even give you a value. In fact Merlin are the only people to give a cash price so, currently that's exactly what it's worth not some sort imaginary higher value you have in your head.

A car is only worth what someone will buy it for. If the cheapest one on carzone is 11k that should be around the price you should be considering.

he's right ... the current value of a car is what the market will currently pay ..

Donedeal is the dogs bollix allright , sold my wifes car on it , simply by putting it €400 cheaper then the other cars of th same model (most of which are still trying to get their original prices :pac:), and by really over-stating its safety features etc.etc. (it was a family mpv) .. first guy who looked at it bought it . (after I spent 3 hours valeting the interior before he arrived)

I actually bought her new car on Donedeal too !!!

Wish I'd thought of starting a site like that .. :(

Ask yourself what is your very very bottom line cash price if you found youself still stuck with the car this time next year , and then advertise it for a little more then that ..

Best of luck , everything sells eventually

Bad time of the year now to be trying to sell a cabrio. The season (what we had of it) is now over for these type of cars.
