There's been a slight rejig of the schedule....

Ian Lawler - DUSAC through the Dark(?) Ages
    8pm Wednesday 7th October
    Robert Emmet Theatre (Room 2037)
    Arts Building, Trinity College Dublin

For more information on the location of the talks within Trinity see: http://www.tcd.ie/Maps/map.php

The following words are my own and I don't really expect them to be accurate or do justice to Ian's accomplishments but here goes:

Dr Ian Lawler is a member of Dublin University SAC (DUSAC) with well over 20 years dive experience. He frequently frightens much lesser experienced divers like myself with the vast store of knowledge he has accumulated in all matters diving from detailed biology of the marine life of our seas to the great events in maritime history. Ian has been involved in technical diving of the deep wrecks around the coast of Ireland using mixed gases and open circuit and rebreather equipment. He has participated in many expeditions including forming part of the team first diving HMS Curacoa, HM Submarine D6 and HMS Carinthia. He was involved in the production of the Deep Wreck Mysteries documentary series.

The talk will (presumably) illustrate in a tongue-firmly-in-cheek manner how Ian's diving and diving technology progressed over the years against the backdrop of DUSAC.

Later talks in the series will include deep wreck photographer Barry
McGill, cave diving pioneer Artur Kozlowski and prolific deep wreck
diver, instructor and club diver Stewart Andrews on the practical
approach to decompression for all dives from 20m to 131m(currently).
We will also hopefully add another DUSAC presenter to the schedule and
possibly a presenter from the UK.

The shows are free and open to the public so feel free to bring along
any friends etc. with an interest in diving.

    Cheers, Stephen

Folks - it couldn't be easier to find the location. If you're coming in the Nassau St/Dawson St side entrance - just take the first building entrance on your right (opposite the security desk) and the Robert Emmet theatre is the very first lecture theatre on your right. The name is also on the orange coloured double doors. I'm sure there will be a few diver-looking types milling about outside.

If anyone is driving in then I reckon your best bet is Setanta Car Park just off Molesworth Street: http://www.dublinks.com/maps/Setanta-Car-Park

Thanks to all the folk who made the effort to come to Ian Lawler's talk and of course thanks to Ian for presenting. I'd been waiting 4 years to hear Ian speak about diving and I wasn't disappointed.

It was a very eloquent and well balanced presentation on how the club operated throughout the early '80s with very limited resources, dodgy equipment and even dodgier moustaches and beards nicely coupled with
how techniques, gas mixes and equipment were upgraded for deeper dives over the years culminating with recent dives on mixed gas CCR units on wrecks like HM Submarine D6 and HMS Carinthia. There were some excellent and unique stills of the classic deep wrecks and great underwater footage of the Athenia wreck off Malin. Ian brought us right up to date with the latest developments in imaging and surveying technology and it was superb to see some of the imagery produced and holds out great promise for new explorations of shipwrecks in all depths for the future.

    So thanks again.

€87.04 was thrown into the black technical bucket and has been donated to RNLI lifeboats. Thanks for your generosity folks!

Next date in the schedule is Nov 4 - Artur Kozlowski on recent developments in Irish cave diving. Things are about to get weird and a wee bit scary....

    Cheers, S
