If you know in advance that you will be let go from work and know the date, can you apply in advance to the social welfare to speed things up? obvisously you wont get benefits untill you have your p45.

I doubt they'd start the process without seeing your p45.

    Hello

It is not possible to sign on in advance of being made redundant but you should sign on as soon as possible afterwards.

As well as your P45 you will also need to bring various other documents with you to the Social Welfare Local Office. You can find a list here: http://www.citizensinformation.ie/References/checklists/cim_checklist.2006-11-16.2727226008

Also, the form for Jobseeker's Benefit and Jobseeker's Allowance is quite complex so it's worth looking over it in advance. You can find a copy on the welfare.ie website here (pdf): http://www.welfare.ie/EN/Forms/Documents/UP1.pdf

Not exactly true. You should present yourself to your local social welfare office on your FIRST day of unemployment, as claims are not usually back dated (unless there are exceptional circumstances eg funeral, illness etc). Do not wait for your P45, this can be dropped in at a later stage.

This was about two or three years ago, so not sure how much things have changed.

I worked for Dunnes and ended up leaving. Anyway, went to the Welfare Office, told them I'd be needing to sign on (this was the same day i finished with Dunnes) and they said I'd need to get a letter from someone in management in Dunnes to state that I was no longer employed there. Popped across to Dunnes where they wrote up a short "he doesn't work here anymore" (didn't give a reason) and gave it to me on their proper official paper, i went back to social welfare with it and that was pretty much it.

Didn't need photo I.D, didn't need my P45, didn't need my PPS number. Didn't need anything really. As I say though, that was two or three years ago, and I'm not sure how much different things are now.
