St Tiernan's Cycling Club, heard of them?

Anyone here a member or know anything about this club? I wanted to join a club for training and trying club league racing next year. They're one of the nearest clubs to where I live, and I like the fact that they seem small enough. I'll probably try to arrange a spin with them but just wondered if anyone here knows of them.

    Thanks

They race in the same league as my club (Orwell). Small club alright, but some very strong riders there.

They are very small and AFAIK very focused on the racing, as Tonto says they race in the same league as Orwell/Stagg Lucan/Usher IRC/UCD so you still get to race in a big league with lots of other riders.

Thanks for the info. Orwell are my next nearest club, I might give them a try too, they seem a very big club and for some reason that put me off just slightly (although I've met a few people from there, all very friendly).

A smaller club seemed more manageable somehow, for a newbie to club riding (albeit I have done a decent bit with friends, sportives, etc).

    Any thoughts on that?

Larger clubs tend to have a broader range of cyclists. If you're starting off I'd definitely recommend Orwell. They have a good variety of spins over the winter to suit different standards AFAIK.

I joined Orwell this year and they were very welcoming and encouraging, perfect start to racing with the club league. As Rob says it is a big club so there is a good range of riders and abilities and if starting off in the club league that also means lots of clubmates to offer advice. At least half the club doesn't race (so there are plenty of touring/sportive cyclists there too) but with 200 members it is still one of the largest racing clubs also. I would certainly strongly recommend Orwell.

Location wise it hardly matters, the club league alternates between Wicklow and Meath no matter which of the five clubs you are in and training spins with Orwell from Joe Dalys and the Phoenix Park.

I cycled with Tiernans for years and they are an excellent club. Usually several groups on the roads from beginners to the racers. But its been along time since i was out with them so maybe things have changed.

Thanks all for the further info.

Both sound like good clubs, may just go for a spin with each and see how I get on. Do Orwell have coaching at all? A friend of mine who may also join Tiernan's was told they will have a coach available for training.

    Me too!

Tiernan's were once one of the largest clubs in the country (late 80s, early 90s).

I seriously doubt they are solely focused on racing; they never have been. Having said that, they do have some seriously strong racers, especially a particular veteran rider I know is still going strong....

Well I made that assessment based on there being 18 of them in the club and 14 Tiernan's riders registered for our club league... And I know of at least two Tiernan racers not riding the club league... so that leaves very few non-racers in Tiernan's! Of course racing and other cycling is by no means exclusive and I know they have a leisure/sportive section.

St. Tiernans currently have a good coach working with them. But they are also focused on getting good groups coming out for leisure spins. Check out their website for more details on when and where to meet up... www.sttiernanscc.com .

    Hi all,

I'm a member of St Tiernan's CC. Yes, we race in a strong club league during the season - the same league involving Usher, Orwell, UCD, and Lucan.

We're keen to bring new riders on and support them. Our regular training spins leave at 09h30 on Saturday mornings. The start location can change depending on where we're headed - it tends to vary between Parkvale (Dundrum), just outside the Maldron Hotel in Tallaght, and Stepaside Garda Station, but the week's start point will always be posted on our website, so you can check that here: http://www.sttiernanscc.com/wb/ .

We also have beginner spins leaving from Parkvale at 10h00 on Sunday mornings. Our aim is to eventually transition the beginners over to our Saturday spins.

Contact details are on our website if you'd like to speak to one of the club members (or feel free to PM me) - hope to see you out at one of our spins soon.

    Brendan
