wedges comparison & advice

So as well as considering new driver & woods, I'm thinking of getting new wedges if I can find a good deal.
I've got a 22 handicap, don't play very regularly, but as my irons only came with a PW, I'm in need of a decent SW, possibly a GW or LW too.
I don't play with expensive golf balls, usually an Ultra or TopFlite, so don't know if it will really be possible to get great spin to stop dead.
Just looking for something decent that will last a few years and serve me well.

To that end, I found some possible deals on some wedges, so does anyone have any opinion on any of the following...

    Taylormade TP Rac-Z

    Cleveland CG12

    Cleveland CG14

    Callaway X-Tour

I bought a 50 degree (Chrome) and 60 degree (Black Pearl) Cleveland CG12 wedge (Zip Groove) to supplement the 54 degree CG10 wedge I already have.

I got a reasonable (well I think so) deal on the second 2, getting them both for €150. Have only played one round with them but I was already a fan. They are all 2 dot which is standard bounce. They are available in 1 dot (low) and 3 dot (high). I'm not a very technical player... but personally I have found them great for hitting full shots off the ground and they now have me covered for every possible yardage from 0 to 115 yards. My G10's cover me from 120+ - I just love how they cut into the turf on full shots and could never hit my G10 sand wedge either out of a bunker or off the turf. It's now out of my bag.

Although I think I have a pretty steep angle of attack and take a fair divot, they don't spin back as much as you might expect... but they do stop dead after a bounce - whether that's to do with the club or me I'm not sure but I did read that they don't generate as much backspin as the Titleist wedges. Personally I'd find it too difficult to gauge or control anyway if they did spin backwards like crazy.

So I can highly recommend them. One other thing of note, the 54 degree 2 bounce is not a great bunker SW. The 60 is the only one I can hit consistently from the sand. Not sure if that helps but it's some feedback for you anyway...

I am a big fan of the CG12 wedges. McGuirks have a deal on at the moment where you can get two CG12 wedges for €149.

    I would recommend a 54 and a 60.

have a CG12 52 degree and probably one of my favourite clubs in the bag. I always feel confident that its going to do what I want it to do consistently (a non-regular playing 22 handicap myself)

    Okay.
    1) you're a high handicapper.
    2) you play with crap hard golf balls.
    3) you don't play golf all that much.

Why oh why do you want to get these really great wedges?

I'm not been smart, but good wedges are expensive enough. I paid $100 for a 52 G12 RTG zip groove wedge about a month ago. It's a great club, but I'm still using a lob wedge I bought about 7 years ago from the states for $20. Any wedge would be fine for what you want it for.

Thanks for the replies folks - the CG12s sound decent and I may be able to get a good deal on them.

Reason for posting the above list of wedges is that I have been able to find decent value in them online, much cheaper than what you say above.
If you think I should be looking at something else, maybe an older model club that comes in pretty cheap, please advise - I'm open to any suggestions and not a brand snob.

I got a full set of genuine Wilson ci6 irons delivered for about €175 last year, there's value out there if you look around.
And I'm not talking about €50 for a rusty second hand club either.
I hope to play more frequently in future, so while open on the options available, I don't want to have to spend money upgrading again in the next 5 years.

for example - any opinions on this BayHill Copper set, 52, 60 & 64 degrees.

ya, that's exactly the kind of wedges I was talking about. I don't know if those bayhill are any good, but you see them in shops. Probably good enough for your game and you certainly can't beat that price.

The wedge I got was the rtg dsg etc. It was actually down from 150 in the shop. I know I could probably source it for about 80 online all right, but doubt you'd get it much cheaper than that unless you went second hand. Actually, just had a look and the cheapest I could find was here

You should be able to pick up Cleveland 588's or 900's for about e50 each if you look around. Previous models to the CG range and great wedges.

I have a Bay Hill putter - sort of an Odyssey 2 ball imitation - cost 35 euro & it's fine, prefer it to a Ping putter that would cost 5 times as much.

On the wedges, as someone said, don't get too hung up on the spin factor at 22 hcap. If you got the cash then fine but I'd invest in some advise on how to play them properly too.

One thing I did find that affected me was bounce in the SW. I got a good Mizuno 56* wedge and couldn't hit a ball out of a bunker - it just seemed to dig in too much. Sure enough when I looked at the bounce it was much less than the one I had so I've reverted to the old one again...
