What model, year and engine size is it?

We should be able to give some more specific advice with the above details.

The engine will have a serial number stamped on it (exactly where depends on the engine) and written on the registration cert.

AFAIR, the original engine number will also be written somewhere on the car's stickers/in the on-board computer.

Comparing the two should tell you whether it has really been replaced.

When you say that the engine was flooded, do you mean that it ingested water? If so, was the rest of the car flooded too? If it was then i'd stay well clear - flooded cars tend to have lots of electrical problems.

If it was me, unless I could get further information preferably from the insurance company who declared it a write off I would stay clear...

if it is an insurance write off, the insurance company had to deem that the repairs to the car are generally more than 60% of the cars values......

A new engine for a 530D is not more than 60% of a 2003 530D....which to me would raise suspicions that more flooding MIGHT have damaged more of the car....
    Just my 2 cents

Seriously, in the current market another one will come along. Dont take such a big risk. Whats seems such great value now may not in a few months or when you try and sell it on. I reckon it will depreciate by the amount you paid for it as soon as you drive it off the forecourt, because nobody else will touch it.

Sure you would get this one for 13k

Agreed. No-one will buy it off you. And as you were told it was written off (with the car being sold "as is"), I don't think you'll have any comeback when faults are found at a later date.
It was imported, it seems, probably from up north.

I came across another 5 series that had an engine with water ingestion damage. Are 5 series prone to this?

Run away from this car. At top speed.
