Has anybody been? What did you think? We are considering booking a holiday here (with a view to booking a wedding), but heard that it is grotty and dingy from 2 different people. Is this true?

    Thanks

Yes indeed Gibraltar is a wart on the arse of Spain. Secretly I think they would be quite happy never to get it back.

The town is full of shops selling cheap booze and tobacco. It would remind you of a depressed town in the North of England rather then a resort on the Southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula.

Oh god, is it really that bad? :(

It all seemed too easy! I should have known, a european destination with no red tape when it comes to getting married there. Too good to be ture.

outside a trip to the rock to see the monkeys (which is a must see btw if in that part of the costa del sol) there isn't a whole lot in gibraltar really, its a port town and like someone said a warmer version of plymouth or portsmouth if truth be told

marbella is only an hour east, malaga a further 30-40 mins east of marbella, sevilla about 2hrs north, all better locations in that part of the world for a wedding imo

Yes I'm afraid its not the best of places. If you go over just to see the place you'll go back across the airport runway to Spain after a few hours as there really is not a lot to it. It really does seem depressed.

However, if you are going to get married to avoid red tape you still could. You can get married in Gibraltar and have the reception back over the border in Spain in Sotogrande. It is about a half an hour(max) drive from Gibralter and is a fabulous spot. I spent three weeks there in 1997 for the Ryder Cup and I remember at least two couples who had married in Gibraltar, but the whole wedding parties were in Sotogrande or the immediate vicinity.

    Hope that helps.

Major disappointment, I am sorry waited in the border control (from spain) to get onto the rock and back off the rock wish I had not bothered. If you do go make sure you have sterling before you go to the rock. The conversion rate there is a rip off
