do wisdom teeth hurt when emerging?

I think I'm getting my first wisdom tooth. My gums are very tender right at the very back, and I can feel a tooth underneath the gum. Chewing food is painful and I can only open my mouth enough for 1 slice of bread to fit in (I'm starving!) It's been like this for 5 days now without getting much better

Is this normal for cutting wisdom teeth, or is it a sign of impacted teeth/something problematic? I'd feel embarassed going to the dentist if this was just normal for wisdom teeth emerging :o

    Yes its extremely sore.

You should go to the dentist anyway because some peoples teeth are just too close together and the emergining wisdom teeth can damage them coming up due to there not being enough room,if this is the case then like me you will have to get them removed.

Wisdon teeth coming up can be sore, but limited mouth opening and extreem pain are a symptom of infection around the tooth or pericoronitis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pericoronitis, go to your dentist for treatment. If the teeth are impacted and not coming up fully and this happen again and again you might have to have them removed by an oral surgeon.
