Bamboo is always very expensive here. I bought some great ones in Tesco last year for 10 euro each, although it isnt the tall one. If you had nice neighbours with big ones they might give you some. It has to be dug up and split at the roots .I dont know if cuttings would work. Or buy one big one in a pot and split it into 3 or 4 yourself!

    Hi..

Bamboo needs lots of water so you should make allowances for this, often hose with lots of holes (attatched to tap obivously:)) in buried in the ground beneath bamboo plants will do the job. If it is a very windy/exposed site the plants may not survive.

Also some people will plant bamboo plants in their pots to stop them taking over and spreading like mad. Or use slates/blocks to stop them spreading/encroaching on to lawn.

How many you need depends on how immediate you want the effect, if it was my garden I'd plant them about 2ft apart, but you would have to take into account your budget and also the size of the plants you buy. Further apart if you don't mind about them taking time to spread or merge into each other.

As far as I know best value for bamboo plants in Ireland is Scalp Nurseries (Kilternan I think).
