I had a cooper up until last year when I broke it in frustration after a match(stupid me). Since then I've been wearing the mycro. It did take a while for me to get used to it . One thing I would say is that the mycro doesn't protect the ear. I found that out fairly quick and I ended up getting a few stitches after someone's pathetic attempt to hook me. Really i don't think there's too much of a difference but really it's whatever you're more comfortable with.

Interesting! Good point about the ears. Is the cooper helmet as readily available as Mycro?

The new Cooper helmet won't be available until December 2009, its currently undergoing safety tests.

" The new Senior Cooper hurling helmet is now currently undergoing safety tests. We hope to have the helmet in production in the coming months and available for you to purchase by December of 2009. We apologise for any inconvenience caused to anyone waiting on the new helmet but safety is paramount to us and the tests been carried out are necessary."

Their website is www.cooper.ie, and they have the contact details on there.

Would go for the Cooper myself, like a previous poster a friend of mine got their ear badly sliced while wearing a mycro one. May aswell protect your whole head!

My cooper was the old sk100(think thats it) one. I had a visor from one of those old mycros(the round one) attached to it and so it did a better job protecting the ears although they were not completely covered. If I remember correctly the current coopers do not cover the ears either.
Just looked at the cooper site and it shows that their helmets don't protect the ears either. I find it unbelievable that most hurlers in the country, myself included, are wearing a helmet that has passed tests yet it does not protect the ears.

Another thing, will senior keepers have to start wearing helmets next year?

Dont play hurling but are Mycro helmets not the standard issue?

Was there some hassle a few years ago about cooper helmets in G.A.A?

when did they first start wearing helmets? i remember my old man having one in the 70's it was a cooper too.

Yeah the mycro helmet is the standard issue alright. Still it doesn't protect the ears!

I think the issue the GAA had was with the old style cooper helmets(think they were the sk1000s). Don't think they met safety regulations.

The oldest helmets were also coopers. I remember seeing a picture of my father wearing one. They were there in the 70s. They just covered the top part of the head and were usually golden coloured.

The old Cooper SK100's were used for Ice hockey in America though weren't they?? Thats what I was always led to believe. The older coopers that you see some lads wearing can't be safe but then again I had a Mycro and I still had the back of me head split open and had to get 10 staples but then again imagine if I had no helmet on at all.

The newer ones you see now are made by an Irish company and have no sk100 on them. They are meant to be replicas of the older coopers because they are fair stylish and the demand was huge because they were fair hard to get

yeah, everyone playing hurling, no exceptions.

The Cooper Sk100 was a hockey guard, don't think it was tested to the standard the GAA needed.

Has anyone seen any pictures of the new Senior Cooper? Its only teh junior ones they have on the site

try get a cooper on ebay, a proper cooper not the ones from cooper.ie!!
the cooper.ie ones are far too tight on the sides of the head, look shabby and have an imitation gerry cleere faceguard.

I got a perfect sk100 for 69 us dollars on ebay about 2 months ago.

Cooper sk100 with gerry cleere faceguard only way to go!!
