My Middle East Joke

Early this morning I posted a joke about an Israeli and a Palestinian.

It has this evening been brought to my attention that a 15-year old boy was killed in a clash with Israeli troops this morning. If I had been aware of this I would have recontextualised my joke to be more sensitive (it could, for example, have been told in the context of any other conflict). As it is I think it probably wiser to delete the thread (well, tbh my wife told me to delete my joke, and without the joke the rest of the thread wouldn't make a lot of sense). I have no problem crossing swords with atheists, agnostics, and assorted other unbelievers - but it would take a braver man than me to cross Mrs PDN.

In this instance my attempt at humour was overtaken by a news event which, sadly, occurs so often due to the mutual hatred in that part of the world that it didn't even feature on the frontpage of the website where I get my daily news fix (the BBC).

However, I hope that the PC brigade never gains enough power to prevent humour being part of our daily life and of this forum. I'm not talking about the kind of humour that is mean and nasty and tries to hurt others, but the kind of humour where we can laugh at events and at ourselves. If there's one thing I've learned by spending time with persecuted Christians in China, it is that humour, as well as faith and prayer, enables them to face arrest and torture yet still not to get bitter.

So, my sense of humour will probably always be an acquired taste, and those who don't acquire it will probably continue to express outrage on occasion, but on this occasion I've deleted the thread in question.

I didn't think the joke was inappropriate plus how could you have known? I wouldn't worry about it too much man.

+1, I made that point on the thread yesterday. Joke was posted long before the news was coming through about that fella's death.

    Amen.

It could happen to anyone, don't worry about it.

I'm described as "pro-Palestinian". I read it and didn't feel the need for outrage, PC or otherwise. Context etc.
