Anyone else in the same boat? Gonna rent as a student in the big smoke but also looking for a cheap enough car, handier to get home than getting the bus. I don't mind the bus but a car is handier for taking more stuff. Is it affordable or worth thinking of buying? Thanks :)

Depends how much you want to / can spend in total.

Remember, the car is probably the cheapest on the list (1-2000 Euro gets you a good runner these days).
Besides you will need: insurance (from a few hundert to thousands per year depending on your gender, age and NCB)
Tax (172 to over 1000 depending on engine size),
    Service, NCT,...
And don't forget the parking, that might cost you as well

In Dublin a car is not that useful if you live close to public transport (albeit that is not the most reliable either ;))

If it's just for moving stuff the occasional time to/from Dublin then I would recommend renting a car for the weekend (remember, you probably have to spent more than a grant on your own and that does not include petrol)

Depends on so much! Where are you living, are the buses that bad, what age and gender are you (insurance-wise)?

Bus is only 75 euro for a ticket giving you 6 weeks (weekdays only) of unlimited bus. If you were living far away enough from the college to justify a car, I think petrol would be a bit pricier than 12.50 a week!
